Woke, the comedy series based on Keith Knight’s comics, has been renewed for a second season, Variety reports. Woke premiered on September 9th and proved quite timely in its examination of race and society.
The show stars Lamorne Morris as “Keith Knight,” a cartoonist whose encounter with the police kicks off a deeper examination of how race affects his life. It’s based on real experiences and comics that Knight drew years ago — although the animated sequences in which Keef argues with animated objects are not real, so far as we know.
The second season, like the first, will have 8 episodes, with co-stars T. Murph and Blake Anderson.
Critics were generally positive about Woke, but the first season was written and shot before the pandemic and George Floyd; one expects the second season may be even more pointed in its comedy.
It also kicked off a higher media profile for Knight, a mainstay of the indie comics scene, so that is always a good thing.
