Queens, New York – Save the date! WinC Creative Conference: Pridefest is happening on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Flushing Town Hall from 10 AM – 5 PM. Women in Comics Collective International, (WinC for short, pronounced “wink”), is an artistic and informative initiative that began in May 2012. Pridefest is free and open to the public. WinC has continued its commitment to making events accessible and inclusive for those who are unable to afford commercial comic cons.

“During WinC Pridefest, guests will have an opportunity to celebrate and hone their creative power, events like these are transformative!” says Regine Sawyer, Curator and Founder of the Women in Comics Collective International. WinC serves to highlight the merit and craftwork of marginalized voices, especially that of women and Queer folx of color, who work in various industries such as comics, publishing, gaming, media, education, and multimedia. 

Join WinC for a day of workshops and panels designed to inspire creatives

WinC Creative Conference: Pridefest Program Schedule

  • 10:30 -11:30: Creatives in Comics & Gaming (Panel Sponsored by Priya) – Auditorium. Summary: Join Comic Book & Gaming Artists and Writers as they discuss their careers and what inspires them to create. Alice Meichi Li, Ivan Velez, Shurbhra Prakesh, Alexia Mobair, Ram Devineni, and Valerie Complex
  • 11:40 – 12:40: Sequential Storytelling Workshop – Meeting Room. Summary: Artist and Writer Savannah Zambrano will facilitate this workshop on the Art of Sequential Storytelling.
  • 12:50 – 1:50: Writing for Comics Workshop – Garden. Summary: This workshop is an introduction to writing comic book scripts: from idea creation to outlines to full scripts. Facilitated by Vita Ayala 
  • 2:00 – 3:00: Pop Culture & Melenated Queerness – Auditorium. Summary: Join Queer Pop Culture, Art. and Journalism professionals in a conversation about the current state of the multimedia industry. Featured Panelists: Erika Hardison, Foxy Jazzabelle, Naima “Queen” Muhammed, Chris Kindred, and Janicia Francis.
  • 3:10 – 4:10: Metaphysical Movement: Meditation for the Creative Mind – Garden. Summary: Intuitive Meditation Coach Ilka Pinheiro. will conduct a workshop that focuses on meditation practices for melanated and other marginalized peoples.

What is the ‘Power of Priya’?

The WinC Creative Conference: Pridefest is sponsored by the Power of Priya via a grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). The comic features Priya, India’s first female superhero, and its creators were recognized by UN Women as champions of gender equality. Learn more about the Power of Priya.

The event is also sponsored by Flushing Town Hall Arts Grants for Queens 2024. Flushing Town Hall, a venue promoting freedom of speech and expression, supports the arts through grants like the FTH Arts Grants for Queens, fostering multicultural engagement and education in Queens and New York City.
