Over on YouTube, you can watch The Comic Strip Hero, 1981 documentary made by the BBC about the history of Superman. WE haven’t had time to watch the whole thing, but it promises a fantastic look back with contemporary footage of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

If you have any love of comics and their creators at all, you will feel a lump in your throat as you watch the footage of these two old men — Siegel drives up in a tomato-red Chevy, helping the nearly blind Shuster to talk into an LA apartment as they sit to talk.

It could have been so different.

  1. Seeing Jerry & Joe was indeed touching, but the part that got to me was seeing some old and some departed friends from way (WAY!) back when at DC, especially the late, great Bob LeRose, master of the cover mechanical and King of Color in DC’s production department. They didn’t come any sweeter than Bob.
