Two years ago, a producer for the ScoobyDoo! Mystery Incorporated cartoon confirmed what has long been assumed by many fans: bookish member Velma Dinkley was in fact intended to be a lesbian and be in a romantic relationship with the character of Marcie Fleach (nicknamed “Hot Dog Water”) for that iteration of the popular animated franchise. Velma’s romantic life hasn’t played a major part in the various Scooby-Doo media that have been released since. That all changes with the new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! animated film because Velma gets a new girlfriend.

The Scooby-Doo Halloween special introduces Coco Diablo, voiced by Myrna Velasco, the woman responsible for the various villains the team has faced over the years including The Black Knight, Space Kook and the Ghost Diver. When doppelgänger ghosts of their foes starting appearing, the gang have to team up with Coco to unmask the baddie. Though on opposites sides of the law, it’s love at first sight for Velma (voiced by Kate Micucci).

While the aforementioned Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. series only subtly hinted at a same-sex relationship, this new Scooby-Doo movie makes it abundantly clear from the get-go that Velma harbors romantic feelings for Coco. You’d have to be blind as the bespectacled mystery solver without her glasses not to realize Velma’s head over heels in love. Whether or not Velma/Coco become an item by the end of the film, fans will just have to watch to learn for themselves!

Velma GirlfriendEverything has certainly been coming up for Velma in the last few years. In fact, the character is set to headline her own adult animated series produced by and starring Mindy Kaling as the titular character. This Thursday, fans attending New York Comic Con will get their first look at the show at a panel featuring Kaling and the other producers.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is available now on Digital and will be released on DVD on October 18th

Mystery Inc. has cracked the case to top all cases! They’ve tracked down Coco Diablo, the head of the notorious costume crime syndicate that colludes The Black Knight, Space Kook and the Ghost Diver. With Coco and her kitty in prison, Mystery Inc. thinks that they can finally enjoy a break. Wrong! Suddenly, menacing doppelgänger ghosts of the Scooby crew and favorite classic foes show up in Coolsville to threaten Halloween. Now it’s up to the meddling kids – and their unlikely new partner Coco – to unmask the latest scoundrel and save Halloween! For Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, with trick-or-treating on the line – this time it’s personal!

  1. From what I understand she’s only got a crush on Coco and it hasnt been reveled if Coco has feelings for her. Also:

Coco is an older woman and the gang are teens. So eww.
Coco is the new villain for the movie so unless there’s a redemption arc in there I don’t see it happening.
Bring back Marcie! Justice for Marcie!
