The 2016 Harvey nominations have just been announced, and as in past years, Valiant was the overwhelming favorite of the voting block with some 50 nominations out of some 142 total, including all but one nominees in five categories.

Despite appearances, nominees are not voted on by Valiant fans, but rather industry professionals via an online ballot.

The Harvey Awards may be voted on exclusively by Comic-Book creators, those who write, draw, ink, color, letter, design, edit, or are otherwise professionally involved in the creative aspect of comics, online or in print. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot. Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Monday, August 8, 2016. Full submission instructions can be found on the final ballot.

Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field.

Despite the Valiant sweep, a few other books got attention, including Giant Days from Boom Box and The Vision and Silver Surfer from Marvel. In categories where there are no credible Valiant nominees, like Best Album, Reprint, the lists are actually not too bad.

The huge number of categories with more than five nominees in them tells me that there were a lot of ties because voting numbers were so low, I’m guessing single digits. And before you accuse Valiant of an organized campaign, bear in mind, their fans seem to be able to organize very well without any provocation.

The Harvey nominations have always been problematic because of the ease of these kinds of voting blocs. The only thing that will change that is more people voting but the uninspiring lists of nominees year after year mean fewer people vote and you have all this.

Despite all this, the Harveys will be given away at the Baltimore Comicon on Saturday night, September 3rd and some people will have a great time, I’m sure. Congrats to all nominees.

  1. Seriously? They think that four of the nine best continuing or limited series were Valiant titles? And four of the six best single issue or story???
Um… I’m glad that they are enjoying the Valiant titles so much, but it makes me wonder how diverse (in terms of taste) the judges were this year. There were a LOT of great comics this past year… some of them were even published by companies other than Valiant!

  2. Oof.
Has Fantagraphics ever been completely shut out before?
Only one nom for Drawn and Quarterly?

  3. I’m not overly concerned about this one way or another, but since fans can’t vote for the Harvey’s I’m not sure why they are brought up in this situation. This could be an organized campaign or maybe Valiant staff and pro’s voted for their own books and very few people not associated with Valiant bother to vote at all.
