Valiant Comics is adding to its roster of female-led books during the studio’s 30th anniversary in 2019. On Feb. 27, as first revealed on Comic Book Resources, Valiant will release the first of four issues in The Forgotten Queen mini-series starring the villainous immortal War-Monger, who first appeared in Unity #18. Tini Howard (Captain America Annual #1, Assassinistas) will write the series, with Amilcar Pinna (Generation X!) illustrating.
The Forgotten Queen will follow War-Monger as she ascends from her “once-thought final resting place to wreak havoc on the Valiant Universe” per a release from Valiant. CBR reports that the series will take place across two timelines: War-Monger’s initial rise through the ranks of the Mongol Empire, when she was first whispered about as a witch who could infect nearby warriors with an unquenchable thirst for bloodshed and battle, as well as her current status within the Valiant ‘verse.
“I’m a sucker for unlikeable women. I’m a sucker for immortal heartbreak. And I’m a sucker for defining a villain. I couldn’t resist her,” Howard told CBR. “The Forgotten Queen is dirty and bloody and mean and ancient and modern. There are fights and sacrifice and kissing. We start on a modern research vessel working hard at sea, and we stick around to uncover what kinds of mysteries sink to the bottom of the ocean…”
Executive Editor Joe Illidge told CBR, “Tini and Amilcar are crafting a sensational story to bring one of Valiant’s most powerful and secretly influential characters into the spotlight; she will play a significant role in Valiant storylines to come. The Forgotten Queen is just the tip of the iceberg of what Valiant has planned for 2019, during which we will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of when Valiant Comics was founded in 1989. More announcements are forthcoming, so check back as we dive deeper into the Valiant Universe!”
The Forgotten Queen #1 features three variant covers by Kano, Viktor Kalvachev and Veronica Fish, with a blank cover also available for collectors. In preview pages provided by Valiant and shared on CBR, the dual timeline is revealed, with War-Monger wreaking havoc wherever and whenever she goes.
Attendees at North Carolina Comicon (Nov. 9—Nov. 11), Howard will be signing free, exclusive The Forgotten Queen posters featuring art by Pinna on Saturday, Nov 10 at the Valiant Booth (#A001-A002). Follow Valiant Comics across social media for signing times and more announcements about what’s to come.
