In case you haven’t heard, Velma Dinkley made headlines last week when footage surfaced from the new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo animated Halloween movie revealing that the brainy character would at long last be openly depicted as a lesbian. The film is set to premiere tonight at 7pm on Cartoon Network and stream the next day on HBO Max. In anticipation, Cartoon Network has released a clip from the film.

To solve their latest mystery, the Scooby Gang enlists the help of Coco Diablo, voiced by Myrna Velasco, the fashionista responsible for the various villains the team has faced over the years. Despite the lack of flirting skills Velma, voiced by Kate Micucci, is crushing hard on Coco.

This development for Velma became a major news story covered by the likes of the New York Times, Variety and even NPR! And while unsurprisingly there were the expected detractors, the reaction has been largely overwhelmingly positive. Already fan art and cosplay of breakout character Coco Diablo has been flooding social media. With any luck this isn’t the last time we’ve seen Coco.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is available now on Digital and will be released on DVD on October 18th

  1. Coco exudes serious “Poochie” vibes. How many people did the character design committee survey in their market research? Thank god they didn’t try to rastafy her.
