The Top Comics to Buy for June 28 is a great list for weirdoes, and I’m not saying that pejoratively. The concepts powering these books are original and odd and awesome. The headliner is maybe The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #1, which even has odd in its title. But there are some other really great scary and action-packed books on this list, too. You can find all the usual recommendations in the subsections below…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for June 28, 2023

Batman: The Brave and The Bold #2
Writers: Tom King, Ed Brisson, Christopher Cantwell, and Joelle Jones
Artists: Mitch Gerads, Jeff Spokes, Javier Rodriguez, and Joelle Jones
Letterers: Clayton Cowles, Saida Temofonte, Simon Bowland, and Steve Wands
Publisher: DC Comics
Tick, tick, tick goes the clock as Gotham City prepares for another shocking murder at the hands of The Joker! The brutal and terrifying tale of The Joker and Batman’s first meeting continues as Tom King and Mitch Gerads once again deliver a shocking, bloody blockbuster tale! Stormwatch race to find an ancient sword that has long been buried in the darkest depths of the ocean. A sword of unspeakable horrors, capable of wiping out entire civilizations. But they may already be too late: a group of exiled Xebels have found the blade and are hell-bent on bringing humanity to its knees.
Why It’s Cool:
This book made it on here for the Superman story alone, which is gorgeous and excellent, but the two Batman stories in this book are also nothing to scoff at, and the Stormwatch story is a really fun one for long-time fans of those characters, who are happy to seem them back and tangled up with the DCU.

The Neighbors #4
Writer: Jude Ellison S. Doyle
Artist: Letizia Cadonici
Colors: Alessandro Santoro
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Sometimes the strangest worlds require the most unusual and unexpected alliances. Maw author Jude Ellison S. Doyle and House of Slaughter artist Letizia Cadonici pull the Gowdie family deeper down the rabbit hole as the finale approaches! But where alliances form, paranoia can also grow, and an ominous encounter with Isobel rocks Oliver to the core.
Why It’s Cool:
This book is just so scary, playing on a couple of my favorite horror tropes. The first one is what if people aren’t what they seem, and the second one is what if something horrific is going on within a small community to which you’ve just moved. With a set of complex and interesting family/identity dynamics added to the mix, this all makes for a very compelling comic.

Comics to Buy for June 28The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #1
Based On Idea By: James Tynion IV
Written By: Tate Brombal
Art By: Isaac Goodhart
Colors By: Miquel Muerto
Letters By: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Meet teenage mad scientist Christopher Chaos. For all his life he knew he was different. His brilliant mind works in ways that defy logic and enable him to do things that push him beyond his peers. Unfortunately, these abilities have also caused great pain in his personal life-leading others to fear him and leaving Christopher with profound loneliness and guilt. Then one day something cracked. When the cute boy at high school turns out to be a deadly creature, Christopher finds himself pitted in a world of monsters, heroes, and a cult of hunters out to kill them all.
Why It’s Cool:
Simply put, this is the type of book that will remind you why you check out new monthly comics. The idea is clever and odd, the execution equally so, and the visuals fantastic, with clean and polished linework complimented perfectly by the letters and colors. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

The Seasons Have Teeth #3
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Sebastian Cabrol
Colorist: Dan Jackson
Letterer: Nate Piekos
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
While the Summer photos are a sensation, Autumn is a different beast altogether, and not just because the stationary lair of decay takes up the entirety of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, threatening another meltdown. It’s the time of guilt for Andrew, where his life started to wither as well, but can it do any more harm in the present than it has in the past? Readers will find out in the thrilling and timely penultimate issue before winter and the grand finale arrives!
Why It’s Cool:
This is one of the freshest takes on a world-threatening giant calamity I’ve read in a good long while. There are monstrous seasons terrorizing the world (really terrorizing it), and we are experiencing them through the lens (heh) of an aging photojournalist who is also going over the regrets about his life, essentially playing through the seasons of his life. It’s really great stuff, really moving, and as interesting of a comic as I’ve read in a good while, an easy addition to this week’s list of Comics to Buy for June 28.

w0rldtr33 #3
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Fernando Blanco
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: Image Comics
W0RLDTR33 holds the key to understanding why Ellison Lane’s kid brother carried out such an unimaginable atrocity…but it may already be too late to stop the Undernet from destroying someone else Ellison loves.
Why It’s Cool:
This book is stylish as all get out, but also a really horrifying meditation on tech as a horror villain. Add to that some absolutely stunning artwork, colors, and lettering, and this series — gritty as it may be — has rapidly become one of the books I look forward to most each month.
