This week’s top comics to buy for January 17 lists features a fair of famous British characters getting new #1s, between John Constantine and James Bond. On top of that, another new issue of the excellent Miracleman series arrives, a much-loved miniseries gets a finale, and another comic serves up like 100 pages of zombies and aliens. It is, in other words, a good week.

You can find the usual lists below…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for January 17

comics to buy for january 17The Colonized: Zombies Vs. Aliens #1
Writer: Chris Ryall
Artist: Drew Moss
Colorist: Jay Fotos
Letterer: Tom Long
Publisher: Image Comics / Syzygy Publishing
Where there’s aliens, there’s zombies! These otherworldy threats converge in the secluded Carbon Falls Collective. A 2nd-gen off-the-grid’er, Huxley Robertson is dealing with both loss and the elders’ pushback against his plans for a fully sustainable town. Amidst those volatile, circumstances, a vainglorious alien explorer inadvertently re-animates the town’s dead! Add a rogue ATF agent into the mix and let’s just say this is a bad time for the sleepy town to be cut off from the outside world.
Why It’s Cool:
This is an extra beefy one-shot with a just-perfect cover by Francesco Francavilla, which — as its title implies — features both zombies and aliens. But none of that is even what I liked best about it. This is lowkey an excellent story about a remote community trying to live autonomously in a way that has minimum negative impact on the environment. It’s very thoughtful under its fun pulp veneer, and a very satisfying read.

comics to buy for january 17The Enfield Gang Massacre #6
Writer: Christopher Condon
Artist/Letterer: Jacob Phillips
Color Assists: Pip Martin
Publisher: Image Comics
Mini-Series Finale. The Enfield Gang Massacre ends here! With nowhere left to go, Montgomery Enfield must face off against the law-alone-in this chilling Western conclusion.
Why It’s Cool: This fantastic miniseries has really captured the spirit of its parent series, That Texas Blood, while serving up an interesting historical setting. And while I’ve enjoyed this book throughout, this ending is the best issue yet, just a perfect payoff for everything we’ve been through in the past five issues. If you’re reading this and somehow missed this mini, make it a point to pick up the trade.

comics to buy for january 17John Constantine – Hellblazer, Dead In America #1
Writer: Si Spurrier
Artist: Aaron Campbell
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: DC Comics
At last, as you demanded: The celebrated creative team of Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell have returned to Hellblazer! John Constantine has cheated death once again—but his heart’s not beating, his body is decaying, and he, his friend Nat, and his son Noah are on the run in America, wanted for murder. Naturally, it’s all John’s fault—it always is. But as it turns out, Dream himself needs John’s help. Something terrible has taken root in America, and it’s using the sand from Dream’s pouch to impose its will. If John can put a stop to it, he might be able to parlay that favor into a chance to save all their lives—but he’s going to need help from someone he hasn’t spoken to in years. Someone he wasn’t always…all that kind to. Someone…or some…Thing?
Why It’s Cool: This is the continuation of one of the best books DC Comics has published in recent years…and it seamlessly picks up right where the first series left off. On top of that, it also has a lot to offer for the legion of fans of the original Sandman comics.

comics to buy for January 17James Bond 007 #1
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Rapha Lobosco
Colorist: Jorge Sutil
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: Dynamite
A relic of the Cold War, the deadly compound Stalvoda has a long-buried connection with MI6. So when it mysteriously reappears in disturbing circumstances, the agency naturally assigns its best operative to get to the bottom of things – 007 himself, James Bond.
But Bond isn’t the only one to have carried the double-0 rank, and with it MI6’s secrets. Former agent Archibald Tyron is another, and he’s also carrying a grudge – one that’s aimed squarely at the heart of His Majesty’s Secret Service!
Why It’s Cool: It’s another volume of James Bond comics from Garth Ennis, which is enough to sell me on this book. Ennis work has been as sharp as ever of late with titles like Ribbon Queen and A Walk Through Hell, and his take on Bond is also not to be missed. This first issue has a good time playing Bond off a retired 00 agent as it starts its new story.

Miracleman By Gaiman and Buckingham: The Silver Age #7
Writer: Neil Gaiman
Artist: Mark Buckingham
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Todd Klein
Publisher: Marvel Comics
MIRACLEMAN VS. YOUNG MIRACLEMAN!
The cataclysmic showdown is finally here!
Why It’s Cool: With an epic clash that has been building, this title was an easy choice for this week’s top comics to buy for January 17. It’s just been so good from its start as well, brimming as it is with legendary creators bringing to life what feels like an improbable followup to classic work they did years back. But we sure are lucky to have it all the same.
