Skybound continues its star studded Universal Monsters line with Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!, a new four-issue limited comic book series from writers Dan Watters (Home Sick Pilots, Lucifer) and Ram V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Batman: Detective Comics), along with artist Matthew Roberts (Manifest Destiny), and colorist Dave Stewart (UltraMega, Hellboy).

Coming your way in April, the series finds Doctor Edwin Thompson from the original film joining new characters incuding journalist Kate Marsden and serial killer Darwin Collier all on the trail of the creature. And as the variant covers make clear, the appeal of a woman in jeopardy from a reptilian creature that lives in a lagoon is timeless!

Years after the events of the original film, Journalist Kate Marsden hunts for a notorious serial killer in the heart of the Amazon. Hot on the trail of this madman, she soon encounters an unexpected new threat–but is he friend or foe? Or is he simply…THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON?

Picking up where the original films left off, this new Universal Monsters tale will take readers back to the mysterious Amazonian lagoon where terror lurks beneath its murky waters. This series is perfect for new readers and longtime fans alike.

“We’re so thrilled to announce our second book in the Universal Monsters line,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound in a statement. “Dan Watters and Ram V are two of the most exciting writers in comics, and to be able to turn them loose with longtime Skybound creators Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart has been an absolute treat.”

This is the second book in the Skybound/Universal pact, following a Dracula series by James Tynon IV and Martin Simmonds that adapted the original story. Unlike that series, this is a completely new story, and every Universal collaboration will have a different approach, Antone added.

There’s a sampling of the variant covers (including the very striking ain one) and preview pages below.

  1. That first cover actually reminds me of an old Jonny Quest episode that was obviously inspired by The Creature from the Black Lagoon (and perhaps also by Lovecraft’s Deep Ones). But the episode took place out at sea.
