Apocalypse, the X-Men’s most powerful enemy-turned-ally, will be at the center of Tomb of Apocalypse, a five-issue series written by Ashley Allen (Magik & Colossus) with art by Domenico Carbone (Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu). Beginning this August, the book will see the ancient mutant recruit Jubilee and Wolverine to retrieve a Celestial artifact in his tomb in Egypt — something easier said than done, given the place is a deadly underground maze filled with puzzles and booby traps.

The press release elaborates, “When an unknown device from Mars crash lands outside the X-Men’s home at Haven House, Jubilee answers the call in a bid to prove herself as more than just a babysitter for the Outliers. Activated by her mutant powers, the device sends both Jubilee and Wolverine across the world to a desert outpost in Egypt being excavated by armed mercenaries – the Tomb of Apocalypse! As they descend deep into the earth to uncover what Apocalypse has planned for humanity, mutantkind, Earth and Arakko, they’ll discover they’re not alone, as they cross paths with long-time allies Rictor and Shatterstar.”

Allen states, “For Earth’s mutants, it has taken time to regroup and process the fall of Krakoa. But unfortunately for our heroes, Apocalypse values action. And he’s never been one to miss out on an opportunity.” The book’s release coincides with the 40th anniversary of Apocalypse’s first appearance in 1986’s X-Factor #6, by Louise Simonson, Jackson Guice, and Bob Layton, and his major role on the second season of X-Men ’97 later this year.

Issue #1 will be released on August 26, with a main cover by Rod Reis, and variants by Ivan Shavrin and Fabrizio De Tommaso, which you can check out below. More variants by Nogi San and Pablo Villalobos will be revealed at a later date. In the meantime, Jubilee and Wolverine will star in X-Men: The Hellfire Murder on July 22, while Allen’s Magik & Colossus and Moonstar will wrap up with their fifth issues respectively on June 17, and July 22.
