Dick Grayson has been through a lot over the last few years. After surviving being shot in the head by the KGBeast as part of Bane’s latest plot to ‘break’ Batman, he lost his memory, severed all ties with the Bat-family, destroyed all of his superheroing gear, and started going by ‘Ric’. Now, following the events of “Joker War,” Dick’s memories are restored and he’s reclaimed the mantle of Nightwing, and with a fresh start comes a new creative team. Today DC announced that Tom Taylor Bruno Redondo, the fan-favorite writer/artist team behind Injustice and Suicide Squad, will take the reins of Nightwing post-Future State, beginning with March’s issue #78.

The first arc of Tom Taylor & Bruno Redondo’s run on Nightwing will team the character with his longtime ally and occasional love interest, Batgirl, to investigate the new mayor of Blüdhaven, and apparent relative of Tony Zucco, the man who murdered Dick’s parents when Dick was a boy. Along the way Dick will also meet a three-legged dog who may or may not become his new sidekick. I don’t know how a dog is going to jump around on rooftops with him, but I’m sure she’ll find a way to keep up.

Nightwing has been sorely lacking in the fun department for a while, so enlisting Taylor and Redondo, who are coming off of an immensely entertaining Suicide Squad run, is definitely a step in the right direction. And honestly, if DC wants to garner goodwill after the way they’ve treated Nightwing for the past few years, putting a strong creative team on the series and also giving him a cute dog is a great way to do it.

Check out a finished preview image, plus a trio of uncolored interior pages by Redondo (which feature our first look at the cute dog), as well as the full text of DC’s announcement below. Nightwing #78, the first issue of Taylor & Redondo’s run, is due to arrive in stores on Tuesday, March 16th, 2021.

Nightwing Tom Taylor Bruno Redondo

Oh, he carries her, that makes more sense

BURBANK, CA – (December 17, 2019) – Nightwing, with Batgirl by his side, returns to Blüdhaven in March 2021 when Nightwing #78, by new New York Times-bestselling creative team Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, hits comic book shelves! Dick Grayson is back after DC’s Future State event—and his drive to keep Blüdhaven safe has never been stronger!

But Blüdhaven has elected a new mayor with the last name Zucco, which can’t be good for DC’s first sidekick and former Robin—but is it good for Blüdhaven? When Nightwing enlists Batgirl’s help in investigating the politician bearing the same name as the man who murdered his parents, she unearths details that will shock and fundamentally change the hero.

And appearing in the first issue of Taylor and Redondo’s new Nightwing comic is a potential new sidekick for Dick Grayson—a three-legged puppy that he shields from harm in Blüdhaven’s alleys! Will Nightwing adopt this nameless mutt? And will she warm fan’s hearts as fast as Nightwing kicks her tormentor’s butts? Meet her for the first time on March 16 in Nightwing #78!

Nightwing #78, written by Tom Taylor (DCeased, Injustice) with art and cover by Bruno Redondo (Injustice, Suicide Squad), color by Adriano Lucas, and a variant cover by Skan, takes Nightwing to the next stage of his evolution as a hero!
