Think NYCC was the end of comics gatherings in New York? Not so! Today it’s Diversity Comic Con at FIT (The Fashion Institute of Technology). Now in its second year, DCC celebrates the multiplicity of cultures and genders that find expression in comics…and make the medium a better, stronger place. (Disclosure: The Beat is a sponsor of the event.)

The keynote speaker is Roz Chast, which is pretty amazing right there. Chast is best known for her hilarious New Yorker cartoons and her memoir Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant was an instant classic.

But that’s not all! There are many other guests and exhibitors, including Jamar Nicholas, Amy Chu, Alitha Martinez, Vivek J. Tiwary, Trevor von Eeden, Ahoy Comics, Papercutz and more.

Diversity Comic Con is organized by artist/educator Ramon Gil and its FREE to the public to attend – just register here.

I’ll be appearing at 3:30 moderating this panel:

3:30 Room A – Drawing on Your Culture
After decades of seeing the same demographics represented on the comics page, today’s creators are bringing their culture with them. Let’s chat with some folks who come from wildly different backgrounds. With Omar Mirza, Ayomide Omobo, Stephanie Rodriguez, Nico Vasilo, Moderated by Heidi MacDonald.

Other panels cover web comics, kids comics, and working in animation.

Cosplay is heartily encouraged and there will be a cosplay pageant at 5:00 pm.

Diversity Comic Con takes place from 10-6 at the Fashion Institute of Technology – Conference Center  at 28th Street & 7th Avenue.
