It’s billed as the world’s largest book store, with 18 MILES of books, but The Strand — New York City’s legendary used book store — is increasingly comics friendly and on Friday, April 8th, they’ll make it official with Strandicon, a full afternoon of talks by such greats as Ben Katchor, Brecht Evans, Joe Ollmann, Jillian Tamaki, Pascal Girard, R. Sikoryak, and Dash Shaw, capped off by a panel on the past and future of The Comics Journal, which is worth the trip all by itself.

STRANDICON presents a Celebration of The Comics Journal: A Conversation with Gary Groth, Kim Deitch, Tim Hodler and Dan Nadel

April 8: 7:00PM – 8:00PM

The Comics Journal has been the leading voice in comics criticism for nearly four decades. It launched its first full-fledged website in March 2011, and in celebration its editors, Tim Hodler and Dan Nadel, will lead a discussion on the history of the magazine and the medium of comics criticism with founding editor Gary Groth and longtime cartoonist and TCJ interviewee Kim Deitch.

This is the day before MoCCA, so you can look at it as an extra day of fantastic events, a kick-off or its own thing. And it’s all FREE!

  1. Too bad the Comics Journal panel overlaps with Drink & Draw Like a Lady (although only for the first hour of it). The rest of it, though … we’ll see.

  2. Heidi, I wish you’d write about your experiences with the Journal, since that’s where your first professional writing appeared. (Back in, what — 1982?)
