Honestly why WOULDN’T a book by Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Die, forthcoming We Called Them Giants) and Caspar Wijngaard (Home Sick Pilots, All Against All) be a hit before it even comes out. These are two of out best and The Power Fantasy #1 looks great, as you can see from the preview below.
And thus, Image Comics tells us that the book sold out at the distributor level ahead of its debut yesterday, and it has been rushed back to print this week “in order to keep up with relentless reorder activity.”
“We’ve been striving to make this as good as we can. To find the market respond to that? It’s heartening,” said Gillen in a statement. “We can’t wait to get this into as many people’s hands as possible. It’s an explosive book, so it’s great to see it explode like this.”
How explosive is this book? The story involves a world where the six “Superpowered” beings each have the power of a nuclear weapon, and the fate of the world rests on their not having a squabble.

The PR for this announcement included many many words of praise for the book. Too many to quote, really, but the Beat staff also loved it!
Gillen’s worldbuilding is subtle and enticing. There are breadcrumbs strewn throughout the book that make you want to know more about this world but everything you need to know for the issue to work is all right here. It functions as a single issue but there is so much laid out in this first issue, you must read more.
