Let’s face it that one of the avenues where the WWE has not excelled is in filmmaking, although its Paige biopic Fighting With My Family was one of the year’s nicer surprises. Today, WWE Studios announced  a new movie directed by Jay Karas called The Main Event, which will team the studio with streaming giant Netflix.
Seth CarrTichina ArnoldKen Marino and Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) will star in the comedy that begins production in Vancouver this week to stream on Netflix sometime in 2020.
Working from a screenplay by Larry Postel, director Karas is best known for the 2014 Break Point remake, but more importantly, he’s directed a lot of television comedy, including WorkaholicsTeachers and a lot more.
Produced by WWE Studios’ Richard Lowell with Susan Levison and Maggie Malina as execs, the story follows an 11-year-old aspiring wrestler who discovers a magical mask and enters a competition to become the next WWE Superstar.
Like Fighting with My Family, the movie takes place in the world of wrestling, so we can expect a lot of popular favorites to appear in the movie. So far, WWE Studios has announced current WWE Champion Kofi Kingston, WWE Studios’ movie staple The Miz and Seamus as three WWE Superstars to expect in the movie.
Have you seen any of the WWE Studios’ productions, including Fighting with My Family, and do you think that teaming with Netflix and doing more comedies is the way to go? Sound off in the comments!
