The Magicians are coming back to the world of comics, per a Thursday announcement from Boom! Studios. The creative behind the franchise’s first sequential, The Magicians: Alice’s Story is back by popular demand on this new venture. That means fans will see Lumberjanes writer Lilah Sturges and Firefly artist Pius Bak team up with the series creator, Lev Grossman.

The Magicians franchise began as a series of novels written by Lev Grossman, which was first published in 2009 and would eventually land on the New York Times bestsellers list. Six years later, the series’s popularity would bring it to the SyFy channel, where it’s now preparing for its fifth season.

Instead of focusing on one character, like its predecessor, this comic will take a step back to expand upon the magic and mythology of The Magicians universe. To do that, the team is back readers back to school – specifically Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, which fans will know as America’s premier magic school. Over the course of five issues, the story will follow the next generation of magicians, the students.

Grossman in particular is excited to show fans more of the world he’s created. He says “The Magicians universe is deep and rich and there are so many places and stories that the books just never got to. Lilah and Pius are going to take us there — with me kibitzing over their shoulders — and it’s going to be incredible.”

Sturges agrees. “There are so many things to say in this world that Lev has created, so many potential stories just waiting to be told,” she adds. “Setting [the new series] at Brakebills gives us the chance to tell all new stories in a familiar setting, with a mixture of existing and new characters, and give readers something that feels very fresh while being unmistakably The Magicians.”

This new series, simply titled The Magicians, hits comic shops on November 6 along with a cover from Qistina Khalidah as well as a tarot themed variant from Alexa Sharpe; both of which you can check out below.
