It’s been eight years since an episode of Sherlock aired. The fourth season of the popular detective show starring Benedict Cumberbatch (as Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (as Dr. John Watson) concluded in 2017.
Fans still wonder if we’ll ever see the hypothetical Season Five. It seems unlikely, with Cumberbatch getting nominated for Oscars for movie roles and Freeman acting in critically acclaimed TV shows and plays (and both appearing in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, as Dr. Strange and Everett Ross, respectively).
However! Fans who still recall the show fondly should know there’s a little bit more to experience in that world. The official Sherlock Escape Room in London has material with the characters in some familiar settings, and it’s fun!
Attendees are treated as agent trainees to become part of Mycroft Holmes’ Network. Unfortunately, Moriarty (Andrew Scott) has reappeared, and it’s up to the newbies to solve a series of puzzles and stop the villain. The puzzles in the Sherlock Escape Room include video footage of Freeman, Scott, and show co-creator (and Mycroft actor) Mark Gatiss and voice recordings of Cumberbatch and Louise Brealey (Molly Hooper).
I’ve done it three times now, and every time has been a blast. Most recently, a friend and I managed to solve it with a minute left (and that’s even with me recalling some of the puzzles). It can be done with two people, but it’s ideal for four or so.
There are additional options as well. A new “Mind of Moriarty” experience launched a couple of years ago. (I haven’t yet tried it.) The attached Mind Palace bar offers themed, seasonal cocktails as well as an afternoon tea (complete with logic puzzle, and available with or without prosecco). That was delicious, with scones, tarts, macarons, cucumber sandwiches, and more treats. Or there’s a “Case of the Poisoned Chalice” cocktail experience, where you solve mysteries to mix a drink.
It’s not cheap, but for Sherlock fans, it’s an essential visit. Even those who like Sherlock Holmes but haven’t watched the show can enjoy it, as it has a good mix of puzzles. As well as a chance to don a deerstalker, or buy your own.
