Marvel Month to Month Sales Charts: October 2014 Variations on Variant Themes

12
BY JASON ENRIGHT — Hello Sales Chart Analyzers! In October, there were a lot of books. So to start, let’s break down the numbers a bit. An interesting trend to look at this month is how variant numbers affect the sales. Several titles benefitted from being included in one or more of Marvel’s themed variant programs this month. In October, Marvel had 3 variant themes, the Anti-Bullying variants, Deadpool 75th anniversary variants and Hasbro toy variants. Many of these issues were in the middle of an arc and normally would have suffered standard attrition of -1 to -3%, but due to these variant programs they got a nice +3 to +5% sales boost. Variants are one of many incentive programs that companies use to boost sales. Recently Marvel and DC have been doing these themed variants across multiple books and they definitely seem to be working. Whether or not, they are actually good for comic sales in the long term is another question entirely. What do you think of variants? Let’s discuss it in the comments below. For now let’s dive into the numbers.

Hotelier: Why can’t San Diego Comic-Con move to November?

10
Oh no not again. With the San Diego Convention Center's expansion plans spiked, and Comic-Con's contract up in 2016, people are once again asking will Comic-Con stay in San Diego? but the question does seem to have a more perfunctory tone than last time. As Lori Weisberg reports, Mayor Kevin Faulconer is all about keeping Con in San Diego and trying to get local hotels to keep their prices at the 2016 level for 2017 and 2018—and many are going along, but only because pretty much everyone realizes that keeping Comic-Con in San Diego is in everyone's best interest. Anaheim is trying to jump into the mix again, but after a few WonderCons in Anaheim, I think everyone realizes that Anaheim is not San Diego, and the show would become a very different event if it moved. And besides, WonderCon is developing into a more significant event on its own.

James Hudnall still getting back on his foot

0
A few days ago we noted that comics veteran James Hudnall was going through a very rough patch, with the amputation of his foot due to a diabetic ulcer. We've been following along on his FB page and although his recovery has been good, he's now in a pretty tough spot. The operation took place in Austin, TX where he'd just moved to take a job—which may or may not still exist. He's also been forced to move out of the place he was staying because it is not suitable for a man in a wheelchair. As of this morning he has no place to live, and staying in a motel while he gets his stuff in order is expensive.
