News notes from the BEA, Day 1
Only a few minutes to post a few tidbits...as usual, compared to even a few years ago, everyone in the book biz knows what graphic novels are, and even if they aren't publishing them outright, nearly everyone has a book that's "sort of" like a GN with words and pictures.
Whoopi Goldberg: Northstar to propose to Kyle in Astonishing X-Men #50
Well, after a grueling morning spent watching The View, as one might have expected, it was the nerd of the bunch, Whoopi Goldberg, who announced that "Marvel is making history with an issue on sale tomorrow, as Northstar will propose to Kyle with a gay wedding in a future issue."
This prompted Joy Behar to ask "Can Batman and Robin come out of the closet now?"

Devil's Due is back…and working with Diamond
Well, things got a little more interesting. After a two-year hiatus, Devil's Due publishing just announced they have returned—and they'll be distributed by Damond which is a bit of a surprise because Devil's Due had previously pulled out of Diamond with some hubbub. But you know, this is comics, and squabbles are rarely eternal.
PW Comics World covers Clowes, Pekar, Wildcat, and MORE
We really don't link to our comics coverage over at PW Comics World as much as we should, so we are here to remedy that, especially when an issue as jammed as this month's comes out. Some highlights:
New, brief news briefs: Muktuk, ShiftyLook, Fraction/Aja, NMA, skiing on lunch, etc., etc.
Classic parody video gone; e-re-issues continue; what are Fraction and Aja cooking up? And more.
DC launches National Comics
If you're a student of comics history the phrase "National Comics" conjures an image of Jack Liebowitz chomping on a cigar while urging teenaged creators to sign contracts...but if you're not, it means a new edgy anthology from DC Comics which will launch in July and run "pilot stories" based on some of the DCU's more "off beat" characters, like Kid Eternity, Madame X, and so on. First up, Eternity, above. Creative teams below:
Emerald kibbles and news bits: Stokoe, Harris, Parker, Moen, Casey etc etc
Emerald City was mostly Marvel and DC lite, so the announcements are very indie/creator focused. And here they are, with a corresponding Pants Peeing Index ®, as in how likely this news is to make you pee your pants in excitement on a scale of 1-5.
Man of Action Studios gets even more active
The force behind Ben 10, Generator Rex, and now the Disney XD Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, Man of Action Studios is is getting even more projects out there, THR reports. MoA—aka Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle—has several new projects in the pipeline:
Strong contender for top selling comic of the year: new Simone Lia
Simone Lia's book of cute cat cartoons, FLUFFY, was one of the top sellers for Cape when it came out, and somehow, based on the title alone, we suspect this could top it:
More art from Image Expo: The Happy, Crime & Terror, Bedlam, etc., etc.
Here's more of the promo art that came out over the weekend from various Image projects, mostly released at CBR or on Twitter. Previously, MARA and CHIN MUSIC.
