To do this weekend, East Lansing, Michigan: MSU Comics Forum

1
Wow did we miss the boat on this. Two days in and we finally link to it. Shameful. On the other hand, it's a sign of comics ongoing academic respectability that a three day comics symposium featuring Nick Bertozzi, Josh Neufeld, Erin Polgreen and more could be taking place and there would be so much other comics stuff going on that it would only be the most serious of six or seven other top notch events. Anyway read all about it here, and there's still time to get in on the fun with tonight's keynote and tomorrows panels:

Carousel brings comics and their creators to the stage

2
About four times a year, noted cartoonist Robert Sikoryak (Masterpiece Comics) hosts Carousel: Cartoon Slide Shows and Other Projected Pictures. This is an event where artists and writers present their comics though a slide show while vocalizing the dialogue and narrative, sometimes incorporating music and sound design. For those in attendance, the resulting experience comes closer to watching a play than a movie or an animation. Sikoryak describes it as “a cross-pollination of theater and comics.”

To Do March 20: “Surely you’re joking, Dr. Wertham!”

Well here's a must do: a chance to see Carol Tilley, the heroic professor who proved Dr. Fredric Wertham was a fraud, in person with Paul Levitz, David Hajdu, Craig Yoe, Sharon Packer and Danny Fingeroth at a talk celebrating Wertham's 118th birthday on March 20th. I

On the Scene: A History of Columbus Comics

1
Throughout the month of February, the Ohio Art League is showcasing a comic art exhibition curated by Ken Eppstein, creator, publisher and chief muckity-muck of Nix Comics, a local comic book publisher. Not only has Eppstein put together a delightful display showing the process in which a comic has made, he’s also arranged for three presentations about the past, present and future of comics in Columbus.

A Con Comes to Grand Rapids

10
Even as folks tape up their combat boots for the San Diego badge scramble, more modest events are springing up everyone -- even Grand Rapids, MI, which is getting the Grand Rapids Comic-Con on October 12 in Wyoming, Michigan. Organizer Mark Hodges is realistic about this first time show—he expects 2000-3000 people to attend event, to be held at the Home School Building—but can't ignore the visions dancing in his head of a future show that draws 30,000 people, even if he can't afford Ron Perlman this time.

Wizard World is back in New York City — without comics UPDATED

13

Con wars are back! Only not warlike. After a long absence from the crucicble of New York City's cramped and expensive venues, Wizard World is coming back to the city that started it all with the WIzard World New York City Experience, to be held June 28-30 at Basketball City Pier 36. The venue is known to us but does recall the cavernous Pier 94 where Wizard held its 2009 show. The date doesn't seem to conflict with anything too major, save for a few smallish cards and comics shows in the midwest.
