Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, the twelve-issue DC Comics series from writer Matt Fraction, artist Steve Lieber, colorist Nathan Fairbairn, and letterer Clayton Cowles, wrapped its critically-acclaimed run back in 2020. Now the creative team is reuniting for a new story focused on Jimmy’s long-suffering employer, Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White. DC Comics has announced Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White, a new 48-page one-shot, rush-solicited by the publisher for release next month.

Along with the new cover by Lieber, the Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White one-shot features a new seven-page story from Fraction, Lieber, and co., along with reprints of previous Perry-centric stories from creators like Elliot S. Maggin and Curt Swan, Neil Kleid and Dean Haspiel, and Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis.

Perry White was created in 1940 for the Adventures of Superman radio show, where he was played by Julian Noa, before making his first appearance in Superman #7, in a story by Jerry Siegel & Wayne Boring, later that same year. Since then Perry has been a staple of Superman’s supporting cast, appearing in nearly every major media adaptation of the character. Stunningly, Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White is the first time Perry has been the title character of his own comic.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen won numerous awards for its twelve-issue run, including Eisner Awards in 2021 for Best Limited Series and Best Humor Publication. The Beat also ranked the series at #3 on our list of Best Comics of 2020. The series concluded [spoilers for a two-year-old comic] with Jimmy buying the Daily Planet, which you would think would technically make him Perry White’s boss, but Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Employee Perry White doesn’t quite have the same wide appeal as their more commonly-known relationship.

Will this new one-shot lead to more new Metropolis mania from Fraction, Lieber, Fairbairn, & Cowles? If nothing else, perhaps we’ll finally get that deluxe hardcover edition of Jimmy’s series I’ve been waiting patiently for for two years? At least we won’t have to wait long for this new story, as Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen’s Boss Perry White is rush-solicited for release in stores and digitally on Tuesday, June 21st.
