Orlando, who was previously a DC-exclusive writer, is making his Marvel debut with Darkhold Alpha #1, which focuses on the titular eponymous grimoire.

The Darkhold itself originally made its debut in the panels of Marvel comics in Marvel Spotlight #4 (1972) by Gerry ConwayMike Ploog, and Sam Rosen, a story featuring Werewolf by Night. Since then, it has frequently appeared in many stories set in the Marvel universe, and even headlined a sixteen issue series called Darkhold: Pages from the Book of Sin from 1992 to 1994.

Those most familiar with the Marvel universe through its on-screen adaptions may recognize the Darkhold, which featured prominently in the fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC and made an appearance in season three of Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu.

According to the official announcement, Darkhold Alpha #1 will follow Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch, as she attempts to save the universe from disaster after the Darkhold falls into the possession of one of the multiverse’s most powerful sorcerers.

While the specific sorcerer isn’t mentioned by name in the annoucement, if the cover is any indication, it may be none other than Doctor Doom himself – a sorcerer with whom Wanda already has a torrid past (see: Avengers: Children’s Crusade from 2012 by Allain HeinbergJim CheungMark MoralesJohn LivesayDave MeikisDexter VinesCory PetitPaul Mounts, and Justin Ponsor).
