Marvel Comics has announced a miniseries adaptation of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film of the newest Star Wars trilogy, and the final film in the decades-long Skywalker Saga. The adaptation will be written by Jody Houser, illustrated by Will Sliney, and feature covers by Phil Noto. It will reportedly incorporate extended and deleted scenes from the original script for the film.
Neither Houser nor Sliney is a stranger to the world of Star Wars. Houser wrote the adaptation of the standalone Rogue One film, as well as an adaptation of Timothy Zahn‘s Thrawn novel and a handful of other one-shots and miniseries. Sliney is currently illustrating Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, which tells the story of Ben Solo’s descent to the dark side, as well as fills in the backstory for the Knights of Ren, who appeared in Rise of Skywalker. That four-issue series, written by Charles Soule, has been a surprise hit, with all three released issues so far having sold out and been sent back for new printings by Marvel.
Whatever your feelings about The Rise of Skywalker, it’s a part of the Star Wars canon that will forever have to be reckoned with. Some material that wasn’t included in the finished film, including the truth about new character Jannah’s parentage, has already made its way out into the world via the movie’s novelization, while other details about new characters and locations are available through entries in The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary. It’s unclear at this point how much the new material found in the comic adaptation will mirror what’s available elsewhere, but having more room to explain some things and flesh out some of the new concepts presented in the film should be a treat for those who were happy with how things played out, and will hopefully improve the experience for those who were, well, not.
