It has been a long time coming — and for some, it might still not be long enough — but toymaker Mattel has been threatening a new movie based on MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE for many years. Now, it looks to be happening as Sony Pictures and Mattel Films has announced a March 5, 2021 release date for the new movie directed by Adam and Aaron Nee.
The general principle revolves around a muscled man from medieval times named He-Man who is fighting against the villainous Skeletor and his dark minions in order to gain control over Castle Grayskull.

Presumably, the Nee Brothers, who are writing the script with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), will be basing their movie more on the toy line and possibly the comics rather than trying to do a direct remake of the 1987 movie, starring Dolph Lundgren.
The Mattel toys have continued to have a huge and enduring fanbase though that 1987 movie…  but let’s just say that some people like it more than others. Heck, after thirty years, there’s probably still a fanbase just for that movie from those who saw it as kids. The franchise has been kept alive in recent comics from DC Comics, as well as the Netflix spin-off series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which you may have heard about.
There are so many characters that are part of the MOTU mythos that there are a lot of options for the Nee Brothers to draw upon and work with. The Nees directed two previous movies  — 2006’s The Last Romantic and 2015’s Band of Robbers — neither which received major theatrical releases in the United States. I did find a trailer for the latter, though, which you can watch below.
