Saturday has arrived, and that means another round of weekend reading! This weekend, July arrives, and The Beat team will be holing up in Stately Beat Manor with a big ol’ stack of books! As always, we hope you’ll let us know what you’re planning on reading, either here in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat!
AVERY KAPLAN: My preorder of Little Tunny’s Snail Diaries by Grace Gogarty has arrived from Silver Sprocket, so my weekend reading is an easy choice this week! I absolutely adore the presentation of this book, which includes an adorable diary-style locket, and I already know from Gogarty’s online presence that the contents will be even more delightful.
RICARDO SERRANO: Given everything that is happening right now with the Courts and politics and all the things that are dividing us right now, I thought it a good time to dive into Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Captain America run. Accompanied by the likes of Leinil Francis Yu and Adam Kubert, Coates gives readers a Steve Rogers that’s fighting tooth and nail to hold on to the American Dream in the immediate aftermath of the events of Secret Empire. HYDRA has infiltrated small town America and is tricking people into thinking they represent real change. Russian supervillains threaten democracy as well and the public sentiment towards Cap is polling at an all time low. It’s a sobering read that invites a nuanced exploration of a character that dresses in the colors of a flag that has stopped representing the things he’s always fought for. On top of all that, it’s action-packed and filled to the brim with political intrigue. It’s not light reading, but you can still enjoy it while wolfing down a juicy set of ribs during the July 4th weekend.
REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: Avery and I recently realized that the reason Riverdale begins on July 4th is because the US officially declared the day a holiday in 1941 (concidentially, it’s also the same year Archie Andrews debuted in Pep Comics #22, an issue which also featured the All-American themed superhero, The Shield). Why do I mention that other than to point out the brilliance of Roberto Aguirre Sacasa? Because this weekend, I am reading all about Archie and Americana in PanelxPanel’s blowout sixtieth issue exploring the history of the small little town called Riverdale. In addition, after starting the Russian masterpiece years ago, I am finally finishing up Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, and I am also starting the omnibus for Marvel’s Phoenix saga, with contributions from many creators including Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, Janice Cohen, Michele Wolfman, Annette Kawecki, and Janice Chiang.
TAIMUR DAR: It’s July 4th weekend so I’m hoping to actually have some time to devote to reading. I’ve always dug Neil Gaiman written comics but it dawned on me that I’ve never taken the time to check out his novels and prose work. So I’m going to be reading some Gaiman penned books. I love the Coraline animated film and the book itself is a quick read so I’m going to start off with that. Anansi Boys was available to borrow digitally on libby app so I’ll also be reading that.
Nice stories! I will try reading them.
