The weekend has returned, and with it arrives the newest entry of Comics Beat’s most-often plagiarized pandemic-era feature: Weekend Reading 112!

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend I’ll be checking out the paper version of Bite Sized Archie by Ron Cacace and Vincent Lovallo. Then I’m checking in with Disco’s Detmer in the third issue of Star Trek: Discovery: Adventures in the 32nd Century by Mike Johnson, Angel Hernandez, J.D. Mettler, and Neil Uyetake. I snuck a peek at this issue and let’s just say it concerns, as Ensign Samanthan Rutherford might say, “implant stuff!”
DEAN SIMONS: Hoping to squeeze in a piecemeal 2000AD catchup this weekend. For various reasons I have been unable to sit down with my subscription backlog of the Prog and so have 5 months of issues to get through. Thankfully I now have access to the lot and have just passed the year-end bumper prog 2262. So with prog 2263 I am officially up to this 2022’s issues. Highlights include Proteus Vex: Desire Paths written by co-creator Mike Carroll, with Jake Lynch returning on art; Kingmaker: Falls the Shadow by Ian Edginton and Leigh Gallagher; and the concluding parts of the second series of Dan Abnett and Mark Harrison’s The Out. If I am lucky, I can reach the February issues of the now 45-year-old British weekly.
TAIMUR DAR: I’ve been super busy for the last week or two so I’m hoping to get to my comics pile that’s been building up. At the top is TMNT: The Last Ronin #5, the final issue of this miniseries brought to us by TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird along with Tom Waltz as co-writer and art by Esau Escorza, Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop, and Eastman. Plus some of the various FCBD titles I picked up earlier this month but haven’t had time to dive into yet.
CY BELTRAN: In continuing through the Marvel cosmic reading order I’d been trying to get through, I got kinda bored with some of the stories I was making myself read (I will not say which ones), so now I’m jumping forward a little bit to some stories I’m more excited to check out. This weekend, I plan to revisit The Brood Saga from Uncanny X-Men #161-167 by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, Paul Smith, Bob Wiacek, Glynis Oliver, Bob Sharen, Tom Orzechowski, Janine Casey, Joe Rosen, Lynn Varley, and Andy Yanchus. Paul Smith’s tenure on X-Men is one of my favorite runs on a book in all of comics, and while I haven’t read the Brood Saga in a long time, I remember it being one of the highest points of Claremont’s X-Men. Next week, I think I’ll get to those Eternals comics I keep saying I’ll read.
REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: Reading plans and ADHD don’t mix. That means I’m still working on my weekend reading from Shut In Theater 109, but have completed several other books and comics instead. I also started to listen to Portrait of an Artist: A Biography of Georgia O’Keeffe by Laurie Lisle on Audible, which I plan on finally finishing this weekend (because how else do you expect me to weed our backyard). Then, after officially declaring I was burned out this morning, an Archie Comics box arrived to change my mind. So this weekend, I am taking some time to enjoy Archie and Katy Keene by Mariko Tamaki, Kevin Panetta, Laura Braga, Matt Herms, Kari McLachlan, and Jack Morelli and the Betty and Veronica: Decades – The 1960s digest with contributions from Frank Doyle, George Gladir, Jim Ruth, Dan DeCarlo, Bill Vigoda, and more!
