One of 2017’s best SDCC offsite events was an incredible look at the Oscar-winning animation studio LAIKA, creators of Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings. Thankfully, it’s back!

They’ve returned for 2018 to the heart of San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter with an all newer-than-ever LAIKA LIVE exhibit. Going on now through July 22nd fans can once again immerse themselves in the worlds created by the talented studio. The exhibit even opened early to coincide with San Diego PRIDE festivities and last night they gave media special access to the exhibits.

As you walk into the makeshift museum, you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder as you’re greeted by the miniatures sets from Paranorman and Coraline. What’s also impressive about LAIKA LIVE is how educational the exhibit is for those seeking careers in this type of animation. Several puppet doctors talk intimately with those curious enough to get a close look at the puppets used for the stop motion. You can even see the process from changeover expression to shot to next expression.

No wonderous animation experience would be complete without two things, lots of beloved characters to get photos with and souvenirs. LAIKA LIVE definitely gives it to audiences as general merch based on the studio’s film slate is available but there are also incredibly detailed artwork and mini figures available that are a must for any collector.
