At the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Marvel Comics made a major, surprise announcement. In December, Indiana Jones will return to the House of Ideas with a five-issue limited series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Aaron Kuder.
Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium will kick off a new era of Indy comics following the iconic archaeologist’s global misadventures, all set during the original films. Sword of Pandemonium takes place following the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Here’s the synopsis:
In the wake of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy’s most notorious villains, including the impossible return of an archenemy, seek a terrifying new source of power to recoup their loss—one that’s fallen into the hands of his former companion, Marion Ravenwood. Now, Indiana Jones has to race to the far corners of the globe in search of a biblical weapon, embarking on an epic quest that will put both his archeology skills and skepticism of the supernatural to the ultimate test!
Sword of Pandemonium issue #1 features main cover art by Bryan Hitch and an open-to-order variant by Alex Ross, and the first of a five-part connecting cover by series artist Kuder, seen below.
Marvel held licensing rights for Indiana Jones in the ’80s and published adaptations of the original films before Dark Horse acquired the license in 1990. The last full Indy comic was the four-issue limited series Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Gods written by Rob Williams and illustrated by Steve Scott, published from 2008-2009.
In September, Marvel will publish hardcover deluxe editions collecting its Indiana Jones titles from the late ’70s and ’80s: Indiana Jones – The Further Adventures, Book 1 and Book 2.
The new era of Indiana Jones is the latest in a series of new series announcements from Marvel Comics at San Diego Comic-Con, which will host its “Next Big Thing” panel on Friday afternoon.
