During the Riverdale panel at San Diego Comic-Con, series producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced that actress Shannen Doherty would be making a special appearance in the CW show’s season premiere. The premiere, titled “In Memorium,” will be a special tribute episode for series regular Luke Perry, who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

No specifics have been revealed yet on what role Doherty will be playing on Riverdale, though Aguirre-Sacasa said the actress would be playing a special, emotional role in the episode. Doherty and Perry were co-stars on Beverly Hills, 90210 in the early ‘90s, and had maintained a friendship ever since.

Riverdale has been a breakout hit for The CW, and Perry’s Fred Andrews had consistently acted as the series’s moral center, a fundamentally decent man living in a town slowly being overrun by darkness and deception. What effect Perry’s passing will have on the show when it returns remains to be seen, but it certainly will never be the same without him.

“In Memorium” will begin Riverdale’s fourth season on October 9th.
