For six seasons fans have watched the continuing adventures of Phil Coulson on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but like any story there comes a time where it must end. In an exclusive to Deadline, Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb revealed that season seven will be the show’s last.

Loeb mentioned that the producers and everyone behind-the-scenes decided on next year’s season being the final one as it allowed the show to conclude in a way that’s satisfying. “When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death,” Loeb said.  “Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”

S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently in the midst of its sixth season on ABC and later today will take over the coveted Hall H at San Diego Comic Con for what’s sure to be an emotional panel for fans. The panel, which begins at 3:30 PM PDT, will include cast and crew members: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, Jeff Bell and Loeb.

Sad that S.H.I.E.L.D.’s almost over? You can watch the show’s current season Friday’s at 8/7c on ABC. For all things S.H.I.E.L.D. and San Diego Comic-Con make sure to stay tuned into The Beat.
