Marvel Studios may not have mentioned the X-Men by name during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but Kevin Feige isn’t sleeping on Marvel’s Merry Mutants. On Friday, Deadline reported that Australian actress Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) has been cast as Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men movie.
According to the report, Feige and director Jake Schreier met with “a number of candidates” before choosing Weaving for the role. Deadline says that the pair have auditioned actors for a number of X-Men roles, but the search for Emma Frost has been the most thorough—perhaps because she’s one of the most powerful and complex characters in mutant lore.
Emma Frost was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne and first appeared in X-Men #129 in October 1979. She’s a Sentinel-classified Omega-Level Threat whose telepathic abilities rival Charles Xavier’s; she also possesses a secondary mutation that allows her to transform her body into a flexible, but effectively impenetrable, diamond form. She can’t use her telepathy while in diamond form and her personality becomes much colder when she uses it, but it obviously has its time and place.
Emma is most notoriously known for being the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, but she has also been its Black King. Additionally, she’s sometimes occupied the role of Headmistress of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and she’s even been the Phoenix.
Previously, Emma was played by January Jones in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
In addition to Schreier directing the upcoming MCU X-Men film, Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) will write the script. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will announce more details—including more cast—soon.
