July sales charts are here, presented courtesy of Prana: Direct Market SolutionsManage Comics, and Comic Shop Assistant. Numbers are based on data from 80,000+ consumers and 600+ stores in various markets. They reflect units sold – BUT for the first time we have a dollar share chart! This report has also added the per-store average sales data included.

These charts are previewed each week on the Comic Industry Insiders Live podcast and presented each Friday in the Prana Bullet newsletter, which you can subscribe to here.

Absolute Batman was #1 once more, with four other Absolute titles joining it in the Top Ten. Last month’s #1, AbCatwoman, was down to third place with issue #2. DC also had Batman #11 in fourth place.

Interestingly, the rest of the Top 10 featured four titles from four different publishers. Terminal #1 from Skybound/Image, Queen in Black #1 from Marvel, Dungeon Crawler Carl Special Edition #0 from Vault, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #20 from IDW.

On the video where Atom Freeman and Brian Garside discussed these numbers, they noted that Queen in Black was Marvel’s big summer event, and coming in at #6 was a surprise when they had done so much promotion for it. They also noted that Terminal and QiB were both blind bagged.

Normally this would be all we know for this month, but thanks to Robert Kirkman’s blabbing to me on video, we know that Terminal #1 sold 300,000 copies. Now, this number may be rounded off, inflated, not include some sales or whatever. It’s totally anecdotal. Using the index number of 100 for Absolute Batman yields the following chart:

Title Estimated Units Index (%)
Absolute Batman #22 483,871 100.00%
Absolute Green Arrow #3 463,210 95.73%
Absolute Catwoman #2 336,823 69.61%
Batman #11 304,065 62.84%
Terminal #1 300,000 62.00%
Queen In Black #1 259,548 53.64%
Absolute Martian Manhunter #12 183,097 37.84%
Dungeon Crawler Carl Special Edition #0 171,823 35.51%
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #20 166,500 34.41%
Absolute Wonder Woman #22 157,500 32.55%

BUT we should also note this is an estimate of an estimate: Prana’s numbers, while more accurate than other available sales charts, are still only representative of SOME sales and consumer interest – they are PARTIAL sales. And 300K for Terminal is still a guesstimate. I present this chart ONLY AS A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT. We’ve been hearing that AbBat sells more than 300,000 copies a month, but 483K would be an insane number. HOWEVER Scott Snyder did say that AbBat sold more than half a million copies in May so……maybe???

Honestly, we need better sales charts than those based on publisher bragging rights, as much as I enjoy them. If anyone wants to give me more accurate numbers, go right ahead.

Now let’s look at publisher market share:

DC, Image and Marvel are all down a tick while IDW is way up, and Vault jumps on to the chart with unstoppable Dungeon Crawler Carl.

For the first time we have a dollar share chart WITH NUMBERS!

Without anything to compare, it’s hard to draw a conclusion, but Vault moves up and Ignition Press replaces Mad Cave – Ignition put out a lot of books in July for their SDCC experience.

And adding to my own comparative chart – I’ll have to figure out a better way to present this data we the months continue. I am not actually a mather or statistician so any help is accepted.

Finally we have the Top 400 titles, but this includes for the first time the Average Sold By Store, which does not collate directly with total sales but gives us another number to work with.
