How best to ring in the new year than to cast your peepers across the stuff to get excited about over the next twelve months – and Rebellion has got you covered once more. This time with their slate of twelve titles to come from their 2022 Treasury of British Comics catalogue.

The Treasury of British Comics was established in 2017 to take advantage of the enormous catalogue of 20th century British boys and girls anthology comic material that Rebellion has amassed from original license holders and publishers who had long let the work languish in storage. Bringing the nostalgia back for older readers and re-introducing lost classics to the next generation – all restored by Rebellion’s own in-house reprographics team, alongside reimaginings and updates.

This year we get extra helpings of classic work by extraordinary artist (or should we say ‘artist extraordinaire’?) Don Lawrence as, alongside the fourth omnibus collection of The Trigan Empire with his extraordinary painted art, you get to see the complete strip that he worked on before – Karl The Viking, published in two volumes to bookend this year – in January and December. This will give art enthusiasts a chance to enjoy his black and white work from 1960 to 1964.

Also in the 2022 Treasury mix is more comedy – with Leo Baxendale‘s Badtime Bedtime Stories plus 60s Batman parody Birdman & Chicken – along with more volumes of villainous The Spider and heroic The Steel Claw; and new reprints House of Dolmann, and A Spell of Trouble; and the first volume of war comic The Sarge.

In the summer, Rebellion’s 2022 Treasury will bring two specials which join classic strips with more contemporary reimaginings – Black Beth: Vengeance Be Thy Name and The Best of Cat Girl, in June and August.

TREASURY OF BRITISH COMICS – 2022 SOLICITATIONS

Karl The Viking Vol. 1

Originally serialised in Lion, Karl the Viking is a sweeping historical fantasy story of an orphaned Saxon boy, adopted and raised by the viking Eingar after his raid on Britain. Upon coming of age Karl succeeds Eingar and leads his tribe into battle in Britain against wild tribes of Picts, and re-connects with his old Saxon family, gaining an ally in his cousin Godwulf, and making an enemy of the Earl of Eastumbria. These fast-paced stories were drawn by Don Lawrence shortly before he revolutionised painted comic art with The Trigan Empire, when he was already a master of pen and ink, and his Karl the Viking series was the pinnacle of black and white comic art.

Karl the Viking Vol.2

In the second, and concluding, volume of Karl the Viking the brave Briton takes the fight even further abroad than before as he and his band of warriors battle against the rival viking Gefion One-Eye in Africa, become mercenaries in a violent dispute between treacherous Russian tribes, and survive against fantastical and unnatural sea monsters. Karl the Viking is the series which made Don Lawrence’s reputation, and it was on this basis that he was hired to revolutionise painted comic art with The Trigan Empire. This volume also contains stories written by Michael Moorcock penned when he was just beginning to create the adventures of Elric.
