Rambo thought he was out, but they keep pulling him back in. Sylvester Stallone returns as the tortured action hero in the latest installment of the long-running franchise, Rambo: Last Blood, 11 years after the release of 2008’s Rambo.
The trailer depicts the titular character living in a bit of a different environment than the franchise is used to. Instead of dense jungle environments, we see him making do in the middle of some desert. The trailer is more focused on action than plot so the circumstances of Rambo’s quest are a little vague.
The film seems to continue the tradition set out by films like Logan, where a Western filter is applied to harken to the tone and grittiness of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film Unforgiven. It’s not an entirely unsuccessful formula, and considering how melancholic the first film feels in comparison to the rest of the franchise, it just might succeed.
Adrian Grunberg (Get the Gringo) is directing, with a script by Stallone and Matt Cirulnick.
