November is just around the corner – and so is the graphic novel adaptation of Juliet Takes a Breath from BOOM! Studios, and The Beat has an exclusive first-look in a seven-page preview. Originally an award-winning novel by Gabby Rivera, the story follows a young Juliet Milagros Palante as she moves from the Bronx to Portland, comes out to her family, and finds a new internship working with her favorite author. It’s not a perfect plan, but it is a plan!
Marvel’s first Latina writer, Rivera stepped into the comics scene writing the America series, starring America Chavez herself, and is currently writing b.b. free for BOOM!; the story of a radio road trip and a teenager’s manifestation of cosmic powers. Rivera will pen the adaptation of her original novel, with Celia Moscote illustrating and James Fenner coloring.
Moscote makes their graphic novel debut with Juliet Takes a Breath, having previously worked in storyboarding on the animated film Tina and the Gucci Flip Flop as well as several zines and comics. Fenner, meanwhile, worked with BOOM! on Sacrifice of Darkenss, and has also collaborated with clients including Sony Music, The New Republic, and more.
When Juliet Takes a Breath debuted in 2016, it was awarded a silver medal in the Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans category of the 2017 Independent Publisher Book Awards, and was also added to the 2017 Amelia Bloomer List, which “curates a booklist of notable feminist literature for people from birth to age eighteen,” by the American Library Association.
