Clover Press and Yoe! Comics have launched a Kickstarter campaign for Popeye Variations. Edited by Craig Yoe, the new hardcover anthology featuring more than a hundred illustrations and stories by some of the biggest names in comics, all focused on everyone’s favorite spinach-eating sailor man and his supporting cast. The Beat is pleased to offer an exclusive first look at work from the anthology from creators Roz ChastDerreck BallardLiniers, and Pedro Vargas.

Here’s how Clover Press describes Popeye Variations:

This hardcover collection celebrates the incredible art of Popeye and his pals, illustrated by scores of artists over the years, with a special focus on the Popeye’s Cartoon Club by King Features Syndicate. Also included are highlights from The National Cartoonists Society’s celebration of Popeye’s 90th year, and a collection of rare cover illustrations by popular counter-culture artists done for Popeye comics. This is a must have collection for any Popeye aficionado!

Chast, Ballard, Liners, and Vargas are among 75 cartoonists whose work is featured in the book. Other contributors include Erica HendersonJeffrey BrownDean HaspielCat FarrisR. SikoryakRoger LangridgeStan SakaiKelley Jones, and Shin Ying KhorPopeye Variations will be available in stores next year, but the Kickstarter campaign will offer backers early access to the book, as well as exclusive extras not available outside of the campaign.
