While her personal life may be something of a mess, Dex Parios is a pretty good private investigator – and she’ll be back to solve another season’s worth of mysteries thanks to ABC’s renewal of Stumptown.

Deadline reported that the freshman series was among 13 shows that ABC had picked up for the upcoming 2020-2021 schedule, noting that Stumptown had performed particularly well on digital viewing platforms.

The ABC series is based on the Stumptown comics by Greg Rucka, Justin Greenwood, and Matthew Southworth and published by Oni Press. Rucka, Greenwood, and Southworth are all credited as executive producers on the series, along with Jason Richman, David Bernad, and Ruben Fleischer.

Stumptown features an excellent cast lead by Colbie Smulders as Dex, the hard drinking and charismatic detective. A former Marine who is haunted by her past, Dex is extremely loyal to her younger brother Ansel (Cole Sibus). Bartender Grey McConnell (Jake Johnson) is a close friend to both Dex and Ansel, but his less-than-legal actions in the past frequently return to haunt him.

Dex’s past continues to haunt her as well, with Sue Lynn Blackbird (Tantoo Cardinal), the mother of her late fiancé, playing a significant part in several first season episodes.

The regular characters also included Detective Miles Hoffman (Michael Ealy) and Lieutenant Cosgrove (Camryn Manheim), as well Tookie (Adrian Martinez), the chef and proprietor of a food truck who becomes increasingly involved in the lives of the rest of the cast over the course of the first season.

The series excelled at bringing in character actors for brief but memorable stints, a tradition that will no doubt continue in the sophomore season.

Stumptown was one of eight scripted shows ABC has just announced as renewed for the 2020-2021 season, bringing the total number of confirmed shows to 22.
