After months of negotiations behind the scenes, it’s finally happened: actor Nicolas Cage is confirmed to be returning as Spider-Man Noir. This time for a live-action streaming TV series called Noir.
The series will see Cage return to play the Marvel comic book character he portrayed in the popular animated franchise Into the Spider-Verse, as it looks into Noir’s origins story as an aging PI in the 1930s forced to deal with his past as a superhero.
The series is being produced at Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. It’s being developed by co-showrunners and executive producers Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel’s The Punisher). Noir was also created under collaborative guidance from the teams behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—specifically, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal.
“Expanding the Marvel universe with Noir is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. “The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” said Katherine Pope, President Sony Pictures Television Studios. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”
The show has no slated release date yet but is planned to release on MGM+’s linear channel, and then globally on Prime Video. It’s been confirmed that the show has been in development since February 2023 – although Cage himself was only confirmed to be in it fairly recently.
It’s a solid announcement regarding Sony’s change in its Spider-Verse strategy after a terrible reception to Madame Web earlier this year, which has hit stream just today. Already, Silk: Spider Society has gone on pause as executive leadership has looked into finding better ways to utilize their rights to the Spider-Man IP.
