Be sure to check out our NYCC coverage of the press conference with Kaling and producer Charlie Grandy. After the most recent Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! movie introduced a new female love interest, Coco Diablo, for Velma fans have been wondering about the character’s sexual orientation in the new series. Grandy and Kaling played coy simply saying, “Self-discovery is a really big part of this series, and one of the biggest appeals to Charlie and I about doing this is when we started working on the show and Charlie started writing the first script,” according to Kaling. “We don’t want to ignore it. She’s an icon for young gay women and I think that’s really interesting to us her figuring it out is a big part of the show and why it’s really fun to do.”

Velma is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of  Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.  An original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers, executive producer Mindy Kaling will voice the titular character. Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register also serve as executive producers. VELMA is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.
