What’s that you say? A comics shop is opening? One specializing in kids comics?
That’s the idea behind Hey Kids Comics, a new store opening in Greenpoint, Brooklyn this weekend. The shop opens today but it’s kicking off with a grand opening signing with author Steve Foxe on Saturday, Oct. 2.
According to an article in local paper Greenpointers, Hey Kids Comics started back in 2020 with a father/son duo selling comics on the street, talking to folks and growing local relationships – and then developed into a subscription service:
When winter came, the father and son team took their initiative indoors and started a subscription service, offering their top picks for the best new graphic novel each month, designed for readers ages 6-10. They also offered a members-only zine featuring articles and activities tied to each month’s selection. Contributors have included amazing artists like Johnny Sampson, Josh Bayer, Lauren McCallister, James Romberger, Matt Feazell, Matthew Shultz, Hyena Hell, Max de Radigués, and Gabe Soria.
The store still offers a monthly club for graphic novels: $20 gets you a book and a subscription to their exclusive zine – the books are aimed at the 6-10 reading group.
The store will sell “a tightly-curated selection of titles organized by subject, including sections devoted to humor, adventure, fantasy, true stories, spooky stuff, historical fiction, and yes, even superheroes.”
Given the vast number of kids comics coming from every publisher – comics and traditional – there shouldn’t be any shortage of new products. And Greenpoint is a fairly family friendly neighborhood, so this age group seems a sound target.
The shop is named after the header of the spinner racks commonly seen in days of yore – a header that has inspired many spinoffs, including my own long running column for the comics newsletter The Buyer’s Guide – so what can I say, but, Great name!
Anyway, the whole thing is just as sweet and charming as could be – and a welcome addition to NYC’s comics store line-up.
Hey Kids Comics is located at 157 Huron Street in Greenpoint. Hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 6pm. Check them out on Instagram, too.
