In an interview with IGN discussing Clayface, DC Studios co-CEO and chairman Peter Safran has revealed Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis will voice Scott Free and Big Barda in the animated Mister Miracle series. The show, based on the 2017 comics series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, is being developed by King for HBO Max, and follow the married pair of New Gods as they adapt to life on Earth.

Safran dropped the news very casually, saying, “I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns, and he adapted his book Mister Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it’s just dynamite. Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda. And I just think it’s a book that I’ve always loved, and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say ‘This book saved my life.'”

Hutcherson, 34, is best-known for playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games movies (2012-15), while Davis, 39, rose to fame on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire (2014-17), and the seminal Black Mirror episode “San Junipero” (2016). The pair’s heights bode well for comics accuracy if either of them make the transition to a live-action DCU project, with Hutcherson standing at 5 foot 5, and Davis towering over him at 5 foot 10 1/2.
Should they do so, they’ll be the first actors to play the characters (who were both created by Jack Kirby in 1971) in live-action. Incidentally, this is not Hutcherson’s first time voicing a DC character: as a child, he played Van-El, Superman’s illusory son, on Justice League Unlimited‘s 2004 adaptation of “For the Man Who Has Everything.” His other comics-based roles include Robin in 2003’s American Splendor, and the English dub voice for Shinjiro Hayata on Netflix’s Ultraman (2019-23).
Elsewhere in the interview, Safran discusses the new management from Skydance, shares Lanterns season two (which will have Halt and Catch Fire‘s Christopher Cantwell as the new co-showrunner) has not been confirmed yet, and confirms The Batman Part II will resume filming. In the meantime, the DCU will continue with Clayface, in theaters October 23, and Creature Commandos season two will keep the animated side of the setting going on HBO Max sometime next year.
