Decentralized Pictures, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting emerging filmmakers, announced a partnership with director Kevin Smith to launch the Kevin Smith Casting Award. Smith is best known for his work on independent films Clerks and Mallrats. The Kevin Smith Casting Award is an opportunity for aspiring actors to be chosen for a speaking role in an upcoming film by the writer/director through a DCP community selection process. Aspiring actors and actresses aged 18 and up have until November 15th to record their submission voicing lines as the View Askewniverse character “Jay.”

Decentralized Pictures also recently hosted the Sofia Coppola Short Film Award which received over 2,300 submissions using their community selection process. The submission process is detailed in the press release,

To submit for consideration, all aspiring actors and actresses aged 18+ can record themselves saying the provided lines like one of the characters most associated with View Askeniverse, Jay. The lines must be said as written, but they are encouraged to interpret the material in their own way, while remaining faithful to the character. The top rated projects will first be selected by the DCP community using the nonprofit’s transparent voting platform, evaluating each submission for their creative identity and artistic voice. Smith and the DCP Board will then select the final recipient(s) from the community chosen finalists to have this once in a lifetime experience.

After the community selection, Smith and the DCP board will choose two applicants to receive a speaking role in Smith’s upcoming feature film. According to the press release, “The award recipients must be able to travel to Canada or Los Angeles for the shoot. Full eligibility and submission requirements for the Kevin Smith Casting Award can be found HERE.” Smith also uploaded this short video announcing the partnership with Decentralized Pictures.
