Well, alright! In a slam bang final episode, The Walking Dead not only left the farm but teased the sadistic jail, and finally introduced the bad-ass Michonne, in a dramatic entry:

And afterwards, on The Walking Dead, it was announced that former Treme actress Danai Gurira has been cast as the sword-wielding zombie slicer.

THR had more on the casting:

In an interview about the finale, Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter that the series was "transitioning into a new world" where the survivors are "faced with more adversaries, danger and different kinds of threats" and that Michonne is a "big part of that." "She saves Andrea and she's carrying a sword. This is a very strange visual for fans of the show," Kirkman told THR. "Fans of the comic book know all about her and I'm sure are very excited to see her. … I like to think about how the audience that just watches the show takes that. I think that is such a bizarre and jarring image. It really speaks volumes as to what you're going to be seeing in season three."

More of Michonne’s past was just revealed in a six-page comic in Playboy, of which two pages can be previewed here.

  1. just an opinion, but i’m thinking that fans of just the tv show (which i am) might think of the addition of this new character in two ways: (a) the show has gone from a horror show to an action/adventure show with a sword wielding ripley type or (b) the show has gone from a horror show to a horror show with a super hero in it, ala wolverine (best at what she does and what she does ain’t pretty). either way, with this new addition gone is the show about everyday folks dealing with a world that’s become a complete nightmare. i’m a fan of the above genres (action/adventure & super heroes), so i’ll keep watching. folks that are not fans of said genres, i guess we’re gonna have to wait and see how they react to this new addition to the cast of characters.

  2. Well, I would guess that the version of this character will be tweaked to fit the world the TV show has created, as opposed to being an exact recreation of the comic book character, who exists in a very different world of fiction.

  3. I think people will not be able to stop watching this series, most of them will embrace this tough ass Kill Billesque female character, and they’re now even more warned that this show is not going to ever be predictable. Bring it on, I’m saying!

  4. @joseph- you could be right. most folks that i’ve talked to that do read the comic have told me that all the characters have been tweeked to various degrees, so i guess there’s no reason to think it would be any different for the michonne character.

@ralph- you also, could be right. my wife, who could care less about anything in nerd culture absolutely loves this show and is willing to keep an open mind when it comes to the michonne character.

i guess when all is said and done we’ll just have to wait and see what the good folks over at “the walking dead” camp have in store for us as far as season three is concerned. should be a fun ride.

  5. I was lucky enough to get the first 30 issues or so of the comic at once and started to read it. I had to FORCE myself to go to bed at 4 am because I had been reading it for hours. The next day, right after work, I came home and ignored the TV and finished reading the stack of comics I had. Then I went out and got more. It was THAT good… and this series is just about of the same obsessive quality. It really is one of the best things I’ve seen since the first seasons of LOST.

The characters in the TV show have definitely been tweaked, and so have the plots. So I really don’t have many concerns about how Michonne will be treated and received in the TV show. Also, I think her appearance in the show is MUCH more dramatic than it was in the comic.

I’m excited and looking forward to seeing season three.

  6. Lately this show should be called the Talking Dead. That said, losing the little girl was great, now lose the other kid, and b*chy mom and the show will be a lot less annoying.

A sword wielding rear kicker played by a tough attractive woman is so welcome.

  7. Actually, if you’ve read the comic you would know Michone isn’t a super hero or psychotic zombie slasher at all. She just knows how to survive and not let anyone mess with her. And what else would you expect from any survivors left by now?
Also, the zombies by her side is so that she doesnt get attacked (same trick rick used once, covering zombie insides and smell over himself to not attract them).

The last thing this show would need is another tea party and episodes filled with blablablablabla…

I’m happy they are back on track with the comic plot (prison) and didn’t try to make this into more of a soap opera.
