Deadline and The Wrap report DC’s upcoming animated film Dynamic Duo has found its Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Mason Thames (The Black Phone, the How to Train Your Dragon remake) will voice Grayson, while Logan Kim (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Walking Dead: Dead City) will play Jason in the new take on the two Robins’ early years. Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi have also been cast as a pair of villains, respectively listed as as Red Hood One, and Red Hood Two.
Set to hit theaters on September 22, 2028, Dynamic Duo is directed by stop motion film veteran Arthur Mintz from a script by Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, and will tell the story of how Dick and Jason’s friendship is “tested by competing visions of a future, out of which will come a new Dynamic Duo.” The film, produced by James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves, will utilize a mix of CG animation, puppetry, and “live-action real-time performance” pioneered by Mintz’s New Orleans-based animation studio Swaybox.
Superhero Hype shares Thames, 19, confirmed his casting in an Instagram story featuring a bag of Nightwing trade paperbacks, indicating we will see the character’s older alter-ego. While the film is not intended to be part of Gunn & Safran’s DCU or Reeves’ Batman saga, it does open the door to Thames and Kim (also 19) reprising their roles in live-action, similar to Nicolas Cage starring in Spider-Noir after voicing another version of the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Pace’s casting indicates he will portray an earlier incarnation of the Joker, who was established as having been the Red Hood before Todd, and his disfigurement, in the comics in 1951. The Foundation star, 47, previously portrayed the MCU’s Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Captain Marvel (2019), and voices the evil Thragg on Invincible. Buscemi, meanwhile, hasn’t appeared in a DC or Marvel project until now, but voiced the Daytrader in Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and Starscream in Transformers One (2024).
In the meantime, fans will get to visit the DCU’s version of Gotham on the big screen in the R-rated Clayface, out October 23, and return to Reeves’s take in The Batman Part II on February 18, 2028. The next animated Batman film, Batman: Knightquest, will also be released digitally and on physical media at some point in the near future.
