by Paul O’Brien

November was meant to be the final month of SECRET INVASION, but that slipped into December, taking some high-profile crossover issues with it. In fact, perhaps the most striking feature of this month’s chart is the number of high profile books that are missing: no SECRET INVASION, no NEW AVENGERS, no MIGHTY AVENGERS, no ASTONISHING X-MEN, no THOR.

Since Marvel are saving most of their new titles for the upcoming “Dark Reign” promotion, there’s not much in the way of new books either. The month’s highest profile release was ULTIMATUM #1. There’s a couple of low-profile miniseries, and, uh, that’s about it, really.

With FINAL CRISIS and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA also absent, it’s a weird month all round. As usual, Marvel had the biggest share of the direct market, but it’s closer than usual. They led DC by 43% to 35% in unit share, but in dollar share, it’s a mere 37% to 34%.

Thanks as always to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their figures for these calculations.

1. ULTIMATUM
11/08 Ultimatum #1 of 5 - 114,230

In the absence of SECRET INVASION (which would probably have beaten it by 35,000 or so), ULTIMATUM takes the top spot this month. This series is supposed to reinvigorate the Ultimate imprint, which has been flagging a bit over the last year or so. And at first glance, it’s off to a pretty strong start – 115K is roughly what FINAL CRISIS did last month.

But it’s not quite that simple. For one thing, it’s significantly lower than the first month sales of ULTIMATES 3 #1, which shifted an estimated 131K back in December 2007. With all the hype, you might have thought ULTIMATUM would deliver similar numbers. Then again, the Ultimate imprint generally has taken a hit over the last year, so perhaps not.

More surprising is the performance of the November tie-in issues, ULTIMATE X-MEN #98 and ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #58. Normally, you’d expect them to get big sales boosts from the crossover. But… well, see for yourself.

This is really very odd. ULTIMATUM is the top-selling book of the month – and even if all the top-selling titles had come out, it would still probably have been number two, behind SECRET INVASION and marginally ahead of FINAL CRISIS. Yet the crossover seems to have had zero effect on ULTIMATE X-MEN, and only an anaemic impact on ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR.

I don’t know quite what to make of this, but it suggests Marvel might have an uphill task in reigniting interest in the Ultimate books.

Right, back to the rundown. ULTIMATUM was number one, and BATMAN #681 is number two. NEW AVENGERS would probably have been next, if it had shipped, but instead…

Every issue of HULK has a variant cover. But issues #6 and #7 had variants by the late Michael Turner, while issue #8 has Sal Buscema, who’s on all sorts of titles this month, but isn’t quite as special as a tribute comic. Nonetheless, HULK was holding steady at 100K for a good long while, and 10% of its sales seems to have gone missing somewhere since June.

Last month’s sales were boosted by the Diamond sketch variant, adding 6,122 to the total. If you just go by the regular edition, then issue #503 sold 81,074 for a drop of 2.2%, and issue #504 drops a further 4.1%. That’s still a touch steep, to be honest. Despite some successful events over the last couple of years, such as issue #500 and the “Messiah Complex” crossover, UNCANNY has struggled to hold on to those readers – a problem that seems to be vexing the entire X-Men line.

UNCANNY sales dipped to a similar level in mid-2006, bottoming out with issue #474, which sold 78,140. But that year, it took the book six months to lose 2,000 in sales. It’s dropping faster this time.

Issue #577 has a variant cover by Sal Buscema, hence the sales boost. Otherwise, AMAZING seems to be back on a slow decline.

But let’s revisit the maths. During the twelve months prior to “One More Day” – September 2006 to August 2007 – the three existing Spider-Man titles sold an estimated total of 2,284,676 in the direct market. True, AMAZING failed to ship in several months – but the whole period was boosted by CIVIL WAR crossovers, and it was a very good year for Spider-Man sales generally, so on the whole, it’s a fair comparison.

Now, to equal that total of 2,284,676 a year, the thrice-monthly AMAZING only needs to achieve 63,463. We’re almost a year into this new format, and they’re still a few thousand ahead of that level. In fact, they passed the 2,284,676 total in October, with two months in hand. And that’s without taking account of the increase in subscriptions which is said to have been generated by a website promotion. Conclusion: they’re doing fine for now.

This is part of the “Original Sin” crossover with WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, which hasn’t had the slightest effect on sales. Retailers appear to be assuming that the ORIGINS audience are reading this book already.

                             5 year ( +18.6%)

This is the final part of “Death of the Invisible Woman”, but the sales boost is probably due to the late-running MARVEL APES variant cover.

                                 1 year ( --- )

There’s a total of three covers for this issue, but DARK TOWER continues to lose sales. Drops like this wouldn’t be much of a concern in the context of a single miniseries, but DARK TOWER is conceived as a series of minis. So if you judge it as a de facto ongoing title, the drops are starting to look rather steep.

On the other hand… DARK TOWER was never going to maintain the high sales of the first series. That book was promoted as a publishing event, and obviously we’re now past that phase. Besides, the DARK TOWER adaptations ought to have unusually good prospects outside the direct market, so these sales don’t represent the whole picture.

19. X-FORCE

11/08 X-Force #9 - 57,241 ( -4.2%)
                     6 mnth (-32.5%)

Still dropping. The scale of X-FORCE’s decline varies wildly from month to month, but nine issues in, drops of 8% and 4% are cause for concern. The book doesn’t seem to be holding its readers.

22. AVENGERS/INVADERS
05/08 Avngrs/Invaders #1 of 12 - 108,136
06/08 Avngrs/Invaders #2 of 12 - 83,012 (-23.2%)

                                   6 mnth (-48.0%)

The drops are picking up in speed again, which is a slightly worrying sign. Still, 56K for an INVADERS comic is hardly bad.

25. THE STAND: CAPTAIN TRIPS
09/08 Captain Trips #1 of 5 - 82,671
10/08 Captain Trips #2 of 5 - 64,443 (-22.0%)
11/08 Captain Trips #3 of 5 - 55,076 (-14.5%)

The other Stephen King adaptation. Decent enough numbers for the opening issues of a series, and as noted above, this book ought to have a long and happy afterlife in the trade paperback format.

                     1 year (-10.1%)
                     2 year (-45.0%)

This is part of the “Original Sin” crossover with X-MEN: LEGACY, which started in October. Matters are complicated slightly by a second printing of issue #28, which adds 3,393 to its total. Nonetheless, the second month of “Original Sin” sees ORIGINS drop more or less back to its regular sales levels. That’s a bit disappointing, and suggests LEGACY readers weren’t exactly flocking to pick up issue #29.

29. DEADPOOL
09/08 Deadpool #1 - 75,058
09/08 Deadpool #2 - 65,400 (-12.9%)
10/08 Deadpool #3 - 61,833 ( -5.5%)
11/08 Deadpool #4 - 49,577 (-19.8%)

Much better than it looks. The earlier issues were a SECRET INVASION crossover, so there was always going to be a big drop this month. And there’s also a second printing of issue #3, adding 3,273 to its total. All told, 50K for a Deadpool comic is pretty good.

30. INVINCIBLE IRON MAN

                                 6 mnth (-59.1%)

Still hunting for its level. Iron Man’s existing series tends to sell in the mid-to-high 30K range when it isn’t participating in crossovers, so there could be some distance to fall yet.

31. MARVEL ZOMBIES 3
10/08 Marvel Zombies 3 #1 of 4 - 67,999
11/08 Marvel Zombies 3 #2 of 4 - 47,253 (-30.5%)

Issue #1 picks up re-orders of 3,805. A decent performance when you consider how much mileage Marvel have managed to get out of this joke.

32. SECRET INVASION: X-MEN
08/08 X-Men #1 of 4 - 68,388
09/08 X-Men #2 of 4 - 57,561 (-15.8%)
10/08 X-Men #3 of 4 - 51,565 (-10.4%)
11/08 X-Men #4 of 4 - 46,994 ( -8.9%)

Well, it’s one part successful crossover, and one part minor third-tier X-Men comic. And the sales balance out somewhere in the middle.

Number 33 is ULTIMATE X-MEN, but we’ve already covered that, so let’s move on to…

37. THOR: MAN OF WAR
11/08 Man of War - 43,927

Another Matt Fraction one-shot, following April’s AGES OF THUNDER (47,693) and June’s REIGN OF BLOOD (46,577). It’s effectively a three-issue miniseries, but for some reason Marvel have promoted it in a way that rather obscures that. Allowing for that, I’d say it’s done very well.

                        5 year (-28.4%)

Back to regular sales after two months of variant covers.

44. SECRET INVASION: INHUMANS

09/08 Inhumans #2 of 4 - 45,895 (-16.5%)
10/08 Inhumans #3 of 4 - 44,320 ( -3.4%)
11/08 Inhumans #4 of 4 - 41,162 ( -7.1%)

That’s quite good for an Inhumans miniseries, although obviously the crossover has to take much of the credit. Issue #4 doubles as a “War of Kings” tie-in, though that doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

                      5 year (+28.2%)

Cancelled – or, if you prefer, already relaunched as INVINCIBLE IRON MAN. This issue was solicited as WAR MACHINE: WEAPON OF SHIELD #35, and leads into a new WAR MACHINE series, but it’s listed on the charts under the regular title.

46. AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE SPECIAL
11/08 Avengers: The Initiative Special - 40,064

The ongoing series is on a skip month, but it usually sells in the mid 50K range when it’s not in crossovers. The Special ties up a long-running subplot (as the solicitation pointed out), so 40K is a shade low.

49. CABLE
03/08 Cable #1 - 68,073
04/08 Cable #2 - 59,877 (-12.0%)
05/08 Cable #3 - 54,760 ( -8.5%)

11/08 Cable #8 - 37,315 (-13.9%)
                  6 mnth (-31.9%)

Issues #6 and #7 had zombie and ape variant covers, so the underlying trend is smoother than it looks. Nonetheless, this is dropping awfully quickly for a title which is eight issues in.

51. X-MEN: MANIFEST DESTINY
09/08 Manifest Destiny #1 of 5 - 49,262
10/08 Manifest Destiny #2 of 5 - 39,633 (-19.5%)
11/08 Manifest Destiny #3 of 5 - 35,885 ( -9.5%)

This is an anthology title with an Iceman serial as the lead feature. It’s not doing badly, considering the usual shaky performance of anthology titles.

52. INCREDIBLE HERCULES
01/08 Hercules #113 - 73,533 ( -4.6%)
02/08 Hercules #114 - 52,200 (-29.0%)

10/08 Hercules #122 - 42,876 ( -9.5%)
11/08 Hercules #123 - 35,780 (-16.6%)
                       6 mnth (-37.5%)

Contrary to what I said last month, issue #122 did in fact have a zombie variant cover (following on the ape in issue #121). That goes some way to explain the 17% drop this month – but boy, the trend doesn’t look healthy here. HERCULES gets good reviews, but it’s worrying to see it racking up these sort of drops even while using generally successful promotional stunts.

53. X-FACTOR

                      2 year (-16.5%)

Another book which seems to be bleeding readers for no readily apparent reason. It’s worth noting, however, that X-FACTOR was participating in the “Messiah Complex” crossover a year ago, and held on to a chunk of that audience for an unusually long time. It’s now roughly back where it was last in summer 2007. Nonetheless, it’s dropping faster than it was back then.

Number 54 is ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, which we’ve already covered above.

Readers of a sensitive disposition may wish to look away now.

11/08 Skaar, Son of Hulk #5 - 34,779 (-21.5%)

I’ve seen bricks with more buoyancy. Again, issues #3 and #4 had gimmick variant covers, which goes some way to explain the outrageous 21% drop this month. But clearly, the underlying trend is down, and very fast.

                              5 year ( --- )

This is the first issue by new creative team Andy Diggle and Roberto de la Torre. Since the previous creative team had a higher profile, and the preceding arc was a SECRET INVASION tie-in, the drop is to be expected. In fact, the book was only doing slightly better in the summer, so nothing to worry about here. THUNDERBOLTS seems to have a major role in 2009’s “Dark Reign” promotion, as well.

60. X-MEN & SPIDER-MAN
11/08 X-Men/Spider-Man #1 of 4 - 30,774

About what you’d expect for a random team-up series these days.

61. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

                                   6 mnth (-15.9%)

Coming off a SECRET INVASION crossover, so you’d expect a drop. Sales compare quite well to issues #2-3. There’s a variant cover by Jim Valentino.

62. YOUNG X-MEN

                        6 mnth (-41.0%)

Another book which had variant covers in September and October, and whose underlying decline now catches up with it.

Predecessor title NEW X-MEN was shifting a consistent 37K a month before it went into crossover mode prior to its cancellation. This relaunch seems to have backfired badly.

63. PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL

                          2 year (-70.8%)

Cancelled with issue #26, with a relaunch as PUNISHER in January 2008. This is a SECRET INVASION tie-in storyline, though it doesn’t seem to be making a huge difference.

64. IRON MAN: THE END
11/08 Iron Man: The End - 28,507

Bob Layton and David Michelinie reunite for a one-shot timed to coincide with the release of the IRON MAN DVD. It’s one of those out-of-continuity “last story” things, and does perfectly well by their standards.

66. NOVA

Back to normal after the SECRET INVASION crossover, and NOVA remains remarkably solid at 28K.

09/08 Dark Origin #2 of 5 - 34,078 (-23.1%)
10/08 Dark Origin #3 of 5 - 28,719 (-15.7%)

Drifting off the radar, from the looks of it.

                      5 year (-37.1%)

Not unexpectedly, this has gone into decline following the departure of Garth Ennis.

77. WEAPON X: FIRST CLASS
11/08 Weapon X: First Class #1 of 3 - 24,577

An all-ages re-telling of a chunk of Wolverine’s origin story. These are fairly typical sales for a random Wolverine side project.

78. X-MEN: MAGNETO - TESTAMENT
09/08 Testament #1 of 5 - 34,863
10/08 Testament #2 of 5 - 27,472 (-21.2%)
11/08 Testament #3 of 5 - 24,555 (-10.6%)

Not bad for a series on the fringes of continuity, and only peripherally in the superhero genre.

79. WOLVERINE: CHOP SHOP
11/08 Chop Shop - 24,486

This month’s random Wolverine one-shot for beleaguered completists.

80. CIVIL WAR: HOUSE OF M

10/08 House of M #2 of 5 - 29,498 (-15.9%)
11/08 House of M #3 of 5 - 24,207 (-17.9%)

Mystifying miniseries explaining the back story of the alternate reality from a crossover from three years ago. Sells better than I’d expect for such a seemingly pointless exercise.

10/08 Worlds Apart #1 of 4 - 31,234
11/08 Worlds Apart #2 of 4 - 21,519 (-31.1%)

A Storm solo series which seems to be scheduled as a bridge between volumes of BLACK PANTHER. Not a good number by X-Men standards. Adding Storm to the Panther’s supporting cast was presumably meant to attract X-Men fans to his series, but if anything, it may have had the opposite effect, by damaging Storm’s drawing power without helping the Panther much.

Axed with issue #20.

115. ADAM: LEGEND OF THE BLUE MARVEL
11/08 Adam #1 of 4 - 17,308

Take a completely new character, and add the writer of the decidedly unsuccessful NEW WARRIORS relaunch, and 17,000 is about the best you can hope for.

Diminishing returns are setting in here, it seems. But of course, as an adaptation of a novel, this material may have a wider audience in bookstores.

118. ETERNALS ANNUAL
11/08 Eternals Annual #1 - 16,916

119. SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS

Pretty bad numbers for Marvel Universe titles.

10/08 Battle School #1 of 5 - 25,424
11/08 Battle School #2 of 5 - 16,771 (-34.0%)

Another novel adaptation. Again, I’d give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it’ll pick up some more sales elsewhere.

123. X-MEN: PIXIES AND DEMONS
11/08 Directors Cut - 15,944

This is the X-Men “Free Comic Book Day” issue. If you can get 16,000 people to pay you for a freebie, you’re doing something right.

Heading down towards the other all-ages books.

139. AGE OF THE SENTRY

10/08 Age of the Sentry #2 of 6 - 15,103 (-31.3%)
11/08 Age of the Sentry #3 of 6 - 12,428 (-17.7%)

Well, this sort of Silver Age pastiche has a niche appeal.

173. FANTASTIC FOUR: TRUE STORY

08/08 True Story #2 of 4 - 12,824 (-35.7%)

10/08 ---
11/08 True Story #4 of 4 - 8,481 (-24.2%)

This, on the other hand, is just a bomb. The Fantastic Four have always struggled to support spin-off titles, but dropping below 10K is really quite bad.

176. TRUE BELIEVERS
07/08 True Believers #1 of 5 - 17,155

11/08 True Believers #5 of 5 - 8,218 ( -8.0%)

Another underperformer, but at least it has the excuse of featuring new characters.

177. SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE

09/08 SMLMJ Season 2 #2 of 5 - 11,639 (-19.2%)

11/08 SMLMJ Season 2 #4 of 5 - 8,114 (-10.4%)

Another all ages title; the normal rules don’t apply to them.

Numbers 179 and 180 are promotional items (MARVEL’S GREATEST COLLECTIONS 2009 and WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ SKETCHBOOK), which come in bundles of 25. They sold 7,570 and 7,554 respectively. Quite what these things are doing in the comics chart, I’m not entirely sure.

184. AVENGERS: FAIRY TALES

Five months late? AVENGERS: FAIRY TALES? Oh well, it’s finished now.

The Soleil books are reprints with high price tags, so the economics are very different.

11/08 Devil-Slayer #3 of 4 - 6,856 (-17.0%)

Low-selling Max books. It was something of a surprise when they commissioned a second FOOLKILLER miniseries, but apparently we’re not going into a third any time soon.

205. BIG HERO 6
09/08 Big Hero 6 #1 of 5 - 13,026

11/08 Big Hero 6 #3 of 5 - 6,291 (-25.2%)

Oh dear. This is a Marvel Universe title, and the sales are undeniably dreadful.

Usual bump for the start of a new arc. And from here, it’s mainly all-ages titles and Marvel Illustrated books.

295. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
10/08 Brand New Day #1 - ?,???
11/08 Brand New Day #2 - 2,355 ( ??? )

This is a reprint book aimed mainly at the newsstands. Issue #1 missed the top 300 in October, and I suspect we won’t be hearing of it much in future.

Oh, and finally, HULK CHORNICLES missed the top 300 for the second month running, which suggests it’s no longer relevant to the direct market.

  1. It’s a shame to see “SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS” struggling like that, as it really has been fantastic.

  2. I echo the above statement, but for CB & MI:13. Paul Cornell is an incredible writer, and the series is wonderful. A damn shame no one seems to be buying it in floppies. Is it Vertigo syndrome, where the trades will sell through the roof?

    Cheers,

    B

  3. There’s something vaguely and unsettlingly familiar about this after quite a bit of time of nice relaxing sales numbers.

Oh yes, now I remember. 90% of the books I like the most are tanking. That’s it. Just like old times.

  4. Not surprised to see Ultimate FF and X-Men not catch the Ultimatum wave.

The books are already ending so why jump on for 3 tie ines that way?

The sale should only jump up if the book will no doubt continue.

  5. If you were running a business and every year your product was losing sales, even the things that should be your best sellers, wouldn’t you AFTER FIVE YEARS of losing customers say “We must be doing something wrong! We are headed in the total wrong direction. We need to do things dramatically differently!”??

  6. Don’t forget for CB/MI3 there’ll be a higher than average proportion sold in the uK which is not included in these Diamond US sales

  7. Given that (a) there have been posts on this blog in the past fortnight, so it’s clearly not been completely shut down for the holidays and (b) Paul announced on his blog that this column would be done “in a day or so” back on the 20th of December…

WTF is this getting posted when the DECEMBER charts are almost out?

  8. Conclusion: they’re doing fine for now.

That’s kind of like saying that the Titanic was still seaworthy, immediately after it had been struck by the iceberg, just because it hadn’t sunk yet.

As I recall, Paul, when you originally submitted your 63K “magic number” as a determiner of Amazing Spider-Man‘s relative success, you also said something to the effect of, “But it’s hard to imagine sales getting even CLOSE to that low.”

Month to month, the last issue of November lost 3.4 percent of the sales of the last issue of October, even after it was immediately preceded by a variant cover issue.

A 3.4-percent loss in sales at this point is not a good sign, and anyone who thinks the book won’t sink below 63K in 2009 is kidding themselves, even with variant covers every other issue.

Retcon backlash, mediocre stories, too many sales gimmicks and the new publishing schedule have broken many readers of their monthly ASM buying habit, to the point that PER-ISSUE sales are now the lowest they’ve been since the Byrne/Mackie era.

  9. “[X-Factor is] another book which seems to be bleeding readers for no readily apparent reason”

X-Factor is consistently one of my favorite books, but the Stroman art (in the last half-dozen or so issues) has been so incredibly off-putting that even I considered dropping it until Stroman departed. Fortunately, Stroman departed between pages four and five of the most recent issue, so maybe sales will now stabilize.

  10. It’s ironic that Marvel kicked Claremont off of UXM in favor of more “popular” and/or “critically acclaimed” writers, and the book is selling less then it was under CC.

Both DEADPOOL and CABLE would be selling much lower after the crossovers and gimmick covers stopped, if both series weren’t newly relaunched. In other words, both those books would be selling around the same numbers (or even lower) if the books were around for about 2 years before the variant covers and crossovers started.

The reason why CB&MI-13 is not selling well is because (a) it is the unofficial 3rd relaunch of EXCALIBUR, and people have given up on the brand (b) because there are too many spin off books of other high profile comics and/or A-list characters taking many fans hard earned money (the completest fans) and (c) Marvel is more concerned with promoting the fact that a CELEBRITY writer like PC is writing the book instead of promoting the actual concept and characters in the book.

I have a feeling that ADAM:LEGEND OF THE BLUE MARVEL might become a low selling cult hit. I can’t speak for other comic book stores, but we have sold out of the first 2 issues of the mini series.

  11. I’m only the helper monkey, but given that traffic was likely down during the holiday season, features like the sales charts and the prediction columns were likely held under more eyeballs would see them.

but what I do know, I kept posting while H and FMB were in Maine or stuck trying to get there.

  12. Paul Cornell has written episodes of DOCTOR WHO and I think that he is also a popular novelist. For the editors at Marvel, that makes hime a “celebrity”. That is why Marvel always (when promoting the books he is writing) mentions and/or emphasis the fact that he wrote episodes of the DOCTOR WHO TV series. They think that this will be enough to get people to start buying his books.

Hiring “celebrity” writers (from Hollywood and novels) to write their books is just another sales gimmick the Big 2 have been using (and milking) in order to sale their comics.

  13. Shouldn’t people just be buying Captain Britain because it’s one of Marvel’s best books right now, whether or not Cornell is “a celebrity?”

  14. Man, that’s a pretty embarrassing showing for Big Hero 6. I guess no one wants to see Claremont do anything not X-Men related.

  15. Jessie – Stroman’s art may be off-puting to some, but I suspect he may have attracted more readers than he lost, having been the artist back in the nineties when X-Factor was at it’s creative peak. I suspect the fact that the book doesn’t seem to have much direction at the moment may be more of a problem – snappy dialogue doesn’t quite disguise the lack of narrative drive.

Wraith – Claremont may have sold more X-Men books a few years back, but everything was selling better then. You only have to look at Exiles, which Claremont’s totally killed, to see that he probably wouldn’t be doing any better than Fraction or Carey. As for CB&MI-13, again, it’s just not terribly compelling. Cornell can be an okay writer (I quite liked the Wisdom mini), but FF: True Story was dreadful, and I’m finding it hard to care about anyone in CB (can anyone tell me what actually happened to Meggan prior to this series, btw? I don’t recall.).

  16. “Paul announced on his blog that this column would be done “in a day or so” back on the 20th of December…”

Which it was. I’m sure the delay was at least in part my fault, because I handed in my column about a week after Paul did.

That said, it was the holidays. Relax.

  17. Is SUB-MARINER really a MU title? I thought it was just another MK book in the mold in which they have been doing the MK books.

I had no idea about Young X-men, thats unfortunate. I think the writer misfired with the whole mystery/murdering X-men idea at the beginning. As it is now with the current arc and the current team? I think he should have started there.

  18. If the Captain Britain book was depending on the trade sales, I think the very high price point of the first TPB might have killed it.

I’ve heard it was a mistake, but since I preorder my comics I had to go with the announced price, which I refused to pay, so I didn’t order it.

I guess it must have happened to many other people. Very bad for the series.

    Best,
    Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

  19. It might help if Marvel actually promoted CBMI13 a little bit, but that never seems to be their thinking. Better to push the stuff that is going to sell, anyway. Makes no sense to me. How about putting David Finch on CB for a three month stint or something? Anything to give the book a push.

  20. Chris Midweeker, I’m quite aware that UXM wouldn’t be selling any better then it currently is if CC was still writing the book today. My original point was (and still is) that putting more popular and/or critically acclaimed writers on the X-book didn’t do a damn thing to stop sales from falling on that book. I think that Marvel (and DC) are relying way too much on the popularity and/or critical reception of NAME writers to sell books instead of the actual final product. It’s become all about the WHO and not about the characters and concepts.

  21. Submariner is out of continuity title just like Magneto`s testament. I see nothing wrong with it selling lower due to Magneto being bigger draw in general and having better creative team.

  22. > (can anyone tell me what actually happened to Meggan prior to this series, btw? I don’t recall.).

Claremont pushed her through a hole in time or somesuch during the Uncanny X-Men House of M tie-in because he wanted Captain Britain but not her in New Excalibur.

  23. I agree with Jessie, I was amazed at how jarring Larry Stroman’s art has become since I last saw it. If he had stayed on as the artist on X-Factor, I very well might have dropped the book.

I buy Captain Britain and think its an enjoyable read, but then again lots of stuff I bought has been canned in the last year(the Order, Manhunter, Checkmate), so what do I know?

  24. Amazing Spider-Man in my view is doing much worse than “fine”: it reminds me of the man falling from a skyscraper who, when passing the tenth floor, says to himself, “ok, everything fine for now”. It is a pity to see that the flagship character of Marvel has effectively lost some 40% of its readers. I have tried to extrapolate a trend, and I expect it to land around 61,000 copies.

It is apparent to me that BND was a total wreck, and I wonder what else should happen to be declared as such. If I made a tenth of such a Mistake in my job, I’d been fired on the place…

  25. I left PUNISHER MAX after Ennis left, lending credence to your comment about its declining readership, but I think, at least compared to other titles with similar month-to-month numbers, the book is holding pretty steady.

  26. Wraith said:
“Paul Cornell has written episodes of DOCTOR WHO and I think that he is also a popular novelist. For the editors at Marvel, that makes hime a “celebrity”. That is why Marvel always (when promoting the books he is writing) mentions and/or emphasis the fact that he wrote episodes of the DOCTOR WHO TV series. It’s difficult to know how to take some people on the internet. I’ll assume Wraith is being wholly serious, because it’s always good exercise to try to believe six impossible things before breakfast. But wait. Let me essay another interpretation of these facts. If Paul Cornell has written episodes of a national TV show, and is a popular novelist, that might mean that he is not a ‘celebrity’ writer, but… possibly!… gasp!… that thing of which we hear rumour and sigh so often online, and yet are so rarely privileged to witness at work… could it be…? yes, it could…! … he’s a writer who possesses… duh duh DUHHHH… BASIC FUCKING STORYTELLING TALENT AND CRAFT! **.

In other words – I feel I need to repeat the point, on account of you evidently being a spatula – he’s someone who might have a better grasp on telling a story, and better ideas for what to put in those stories, than some random who-are-you who’s only ever written the same pop-geeky vampire / SF comic half a dozen times for EarnNothingButKeepYourCopyright Press Ltd before being desperately snapped up by the Big Two because he comes with a preloaded and mouthy 10K internet fanbase.

How many people know Paul Cornell is a good writer? Let me check the viewing figures for the brilliant and epic two-parter he did on Doctor Who last year. Oh look. Ten million. In the UK alone. Don’t you wish comics had an audience like that?

Well, here’s the thing. Apparently you don’t, because your orbit is seeded with space junk like Wraith sitting there emitting their furious little numbered protests at the use of writers like Cornell, who, after all, only know how to cater for the tastes of a mere ten million people at once, and god knows, I hear Doctor Who fans will accept any old shit.

Whenever DC and Marvel hire a writer I’ve actually heard of, I tend to think (a) brave choice! perhaps this will lead to something new! something good! something fresh! something done well!… and (b) brave choice! because people like you will wibble on about them not being Comics People. And here you are. With friends like you, no wonder comics are sick. Your screen name should be Brutus, you honourable man.
