Marvel Month-to-Month Sales: November 2008

November was meant to be the final month of SECRET INVASION, but that slipped into December, taking some high-profile crossover issues with it. In fact, perhaps the most striking feature of this month’s chart is the number of high profile books that are missing: no SECRET INVASION, no NEW AVENGERS, no MIGHTY AVENGERS, no ASTONISHING X-MEN, no THOR.

Since Marvel are saving most of their new titles for the upcoming “Dark Reign” promotion, there’s not much in the way of new books either. The month’s highest profile release was ULTIMATUM #1. There’s a couple of low-profile miniseries, and, uh, that’s about it, really.

With FINAL CRISIS and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA also absent, it’s a weird month all round. As usual, Marvel had the biggest share of the direct market, but it’s closer than usual. They led DC by 43% to 35% in unit share, but in dollar share, it’s a mere 37% to 34%.

1.  ULTIMATUM
11/08  Ultimatum #1 of 5 - 114,230

In the absence of SECRET INVASION (which would probably have beaten it by 35,000 or so), ULTIMATUM takes the top spot this month. This series is supposed to reinvigorate the Ultimate imprint, which has been flagging a bit over the last year or so. And at first glance, it’s off to a pretty strong start – 115K is roughly what FINAL CRISIS did last month.

But it’s not quite that simple. For one thing, it’s significantly lower than the first month sales of ULTIMATES 3 #1, which shifted an estimated 131K back in December 2007. With all the hype, you might have thought ULTIMATUM would deliver similar numbers. Then again, the Ultimate imprint generally has taken a hit over the last year, so perhaps not.

More surprising is the performance of the November tie-in issues, ULTIMATE X-MEN #98 and ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #58. Normally, you’d expect them to get big sales boosts from the crossover. But… well, see for yourself.

This is really very odd. ULTIMATUM is the top-selling book of the month – and even if all the top-selling titles had come out, it would still probably have been number two, behind SECRET INVASION and marginally ahead of FINAL CRISIS. Yet the crossover seems to have had zero effect on ULTIMATE X-MEN, and only an anaemic impact on ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR.

I don’t know quite what to make of this, but it suggests Marvel might have an uphill task in reigniting interest in the Ultimate books.

Right, back to the rundown. ULTIMATUM was number one, and BATMAN #681 is number two. NEW AVENGERS would probably have been next, if it had shipped, but instead…

Every issue of HULK has a variant cover. But issues #6 and #7 had variants by the late Michael Turner, while issue #8 has Sal Buscema, who’s on all sorts of titles this month, but isn’t quite as special as a tribute comic. Nonetheless, HULK was holding steady at 100K for a good long while, and 10% of its sales seems to have gone missing somewhere since June.

Continuing the impressive performance of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s “Old Man Logan” story. It’s a real sign of their drawing power as creators that they’re boosting sales to this extent with an out-of-continuity story.

Last month’s sales were boosted by the Diamond sketch variant, adding 6,122 to the total. If you just go by the regular edition, then issue #503 sold 81,074 for a drop of 2.2%, and issue #504 drops a further 4.1%. That’s still a touch steep, to be honest. Despite some successful events over the last couple of years, such as issue #500 and the “Messiah Complex” crossover, UNCANNY has struggled to hold on to those readers – a problem that seems to be vexing the entire X-Men line.

UNCANNY sales dipped to a similar level in mid-2006, bottoming out with issue #474, which sold 78,140. But that year, it took the book six months to lose 2,000 in sales. It’s dropping faster this time.

Issue #577 has a variant cover by Sal Buscema, hence the sales boost. Otherwise, AMAZING seems to be back on a slow decline.

But let’s revisit the maths. During the twelve months prior to “One More Day” – September 2006 to August 2007 – the three existing Spider-Man titles sold an estimated total of 2,284,676 in the direct market. True, AMAZING failed to ship in several months – but the whole period was boosted by CIVIL WAR crossovers, and it was a very good year for Spider-Man sales generally, so on the whole, it’s a fair comparison.

Now, to equal that total of 2,284,676 a year, the thrice-monthly AMAZING only needs to achieve 63,463. We’re almost a year into this new format, and they’re still a few thousand ahead of that level. In fact, they passed the 2,284,676 total in October, with two months in hand. And that’s without taking account of the increase in subscriptions which is said to have been generated by a website promotion. Conclusion: they’re doing fine for now.

There’s a total of three covers for this issue, but DARK TOWER continues to lose sales. Drops like this wouldn’t be much of a concern in the context of a single miniseries, but DARK TOWER is conceived as a series of minis. So if you judge it as a de facto ongoing title, the drops are starting to look rather steep.

On the other hand… DARK TOWER was never going to maintain the high sales of the first series. That book was promoted as a publishing event, and obviously we’re now past that phase. Besides, the DARK TOWER adaptations ought to have unusually good prospects outside the direct market, so these sales don’t represent the whole picture.

19. X-FORCE

This is part of the “Original Sin” crossover with X-MEN: LEGACY, which started in October. Matters are complicated slightly by a second printing of issue #28, which adds 3,393 to its total. Nonetheless, the second month of “Original Sin” sees ORIGINS drop more or less back to its regular sales levels. That’s a bit disappointing, and suggests LEGACY readers weren’t exactly flocking to pick up issue #29.

29. DEADPOOL

Much better than it looks. The earlier issues were a SECRET INVASION crossover, so there was always going to be a big drop this month. And there’s also a second printing of issue #3, adding 3,273 to its total. All told, 50K for a Deadpool comic is pretty good.

Another book which seems to be bleeding readers for no readily apparent reason. It’s worth noting, however, that X-FACTOR was participating in the “Messiah Complex” crossover a year ago, and held on to a chunk of that audience for an unusually long time. It’s now roughly back where it was last in summer 2007. Nonetheless, it’s dropping faster than it was back then.

Number 54 is ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, which we’ve already covered above.

This is the first issue by new creative team Andy Diggle and Roberto de la Torre. Since the previous creative team had a higher profile, and the preceding arc was a SECRET INVASION tie-in, the drop is to be expected. In fact, the book was only doing slightly better in the summer, so nothing to worry about here. THUNDERBOLTS seems to have a major role in 2009’s “Dark Reign” promotion, as well.
