Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m french, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my “Isabelle Huppert is a goddess” country.
This a weird month to analyse. The most disturbing thing is that the usual pattern fall from issue #1 do not work: some titles follow them and other out predict what was supposed to be their doom. Avengers, Avengers 1, and Avengers Occupy do way beter than what last month first issue sales were saying.
Invincible Iron Man seems to be the big winner, with very few buyers lost beetween issue#1 and #2. Coudl it be that either people buying only #1 or variant are beginning to tire up, or, even better, than they actually started to read what they purchase and liked it?
It doesn’t change the fact that of the many launches from last month, almost all the C-list character are biting the dust: Great Lake Avengers, Solo and Foolkiller are out. Surpringly, two of the most unsual characters are performing quite well: Jessica Jones first and, more surprisingly, Mosaic, the all new character. Time of changes and unpredactibility, probably less dark than reality so please, do not take those charts too seriously. Just read and enjoy comics.
Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.
Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.
MS MARVEL TPB VOL.6: 3,500
VOL.1 : 45,204 [+804]
VOL.2 : 18,698
VOL.3 : 11,282
VOL.4 : 6,642

HC vol.1 : 1,942
HC vol.2 : 2,653
No floppy issue of Ms Marvel this month but her first TPB is still selling, cracking 45K only trought Diamond. It’s more difficult to make people pick up the remainign volumes after that.

The new mess is here, and its many many variations, it cost $6 and it is so far a success.

A huge surge probably due to the movie release. The first tpb sales are still pilling up.

Kind of a popular doctor, for what it seems.

9-HULK 12/16 Hulk #1 - 89,810
We will have to wait for issue #2 numbers to see how this one behave. In the meantime, you can scratch your head and argue about whether it is feminist or not to drop/hide the Miss for what is really a Miss Hulk serie.

Did someone lock all the automatic #1 buyers somewhere in December? Because this looks VERY promising if there is not trick sales involved.

Always starting at the same point. This time, the focus is on Kate, or Miss Hawkeye if you prefer. The good news is that Vol.1 of the original Fraction/Aja serie is back in the trade top 300 with huge sells after disapearing during many months. Now if only the other volumes would also dare make a coming back…

19- GAMORA 12/16 Gamora #1 - 65,032
Launching higher than her other Guardians teamates, but that was expected seeing that she is the only one really starting her adventures. It will be interesting to see if one of the three (Gamora, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon) will detach from the others saleswise in the upcoming months.
—
21- AVENGERS 11/16 Avengers # 1 - 81,885 12/16 Avengers # 2 - 64,289 (-21.5%)
Another surprise, with a very weak fall from issue#1, placing the title way higher than what is disapointing #1 sales predicted.

Debuting at the exact same level than before. From what I saw on the Previews, it looks like this comics will perhaps deal with animal rights, which would be a clever move.

It’s a little late but Vol.1 in tpb is at long last available. Dr Strange is first released in Hc format, than later in TPB. Those first month sales are excellent. Let’s see if they will improve with a come back in the top 300 in the following months. Is it people picking up the serie after the release of the tpb: Floppy sales are slighty up, a rarity.

Wow, some of these sales numbers are absolutely dire. And they’ve killed the golden goose in Deadpool, I can’t believe he’s selling less than Doctor Strange now. Just look at the drop inflicted on Deadpool sales numbers since they went nuts with the minis. They even killed all the momentum from Spider-Man/Deadpool with the constant fill-in issues. Marvel isn’t doing a lot right at the moment.
Looks like Guardians #15 had a ton of variant covers (seven, according to CBDB), which would explain the huge jump I suppose?
Based on dollar rankings, I estimate Marvel had roughly 200-300K total overships which include titles such as IVX #1, Hulk #1, Invincible Iron Man #2, Avengers #2, Gamora #1 and Champions #3 among others.
I expect the lack of drops or even slight increase in sales have more to do with Marvel giving comics away for free rather than from retailers actually buying them.
@David Carter
I expect Guardians #15 also had plenty of free overships (maybe 25-30K?). It’s below Jessica Jones #3 in terms of Comichron dollar rankings.
Xavier, have you seen any of the coverage of all the free over-shipping of titles Marvel has been doing over the last few months? It’s been reported on repeatedly on this very site, Bleeding Cool, Newsarama, and elsewhere. If you don’t address that huge elephant in the room, this sort of comparative sales analysis borders on the meaningless.
For instance, Star Wars, Hawkeye, and Mosaic are all reported to have received significant free over-ships. If up to half the sales of Mosaic 3 shipped for free, that series goes from a startling success to a sales catastrophe.
On the other hand, the “catastrophic” decline in sales on Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme looks much less disastrous if you know the sales on the first issue include copies packaged in some subscription box or other.
I don’t envy your task here. Even accounting for all the variant cover gimmicks may not get you that close to the truth. You need some real input from retailers of figure out how many of these reported units represent actual orders before you can compare them to other months, which may or may not have included free over-ships as well. It may be that Tom Brevoort is right, and these figures from Diamond, at least in the case of Marvel, no longer bear any relation to actual sales, even to retailers in the direct market.
Black Panther World of Wakanda #2 also over-shipped. I read somewhere that stores received amounts equal to their order for #1. Actual sales we closer to 23-25K
Second paragraph, second sentence should read “The most disturbing thing is the fact that people are spending money on this stuff” ?

Marvel is like the USA -regardless of ‘republican’ or ‘democrat’ views, we do not matter -or do you think we matter while Marvel has people pay going on $4.+ dollars for their over priced crap that is for advetising space and b.s. “brand identity” pre-programmed comic stories??? We are ‘Americans’/consumers, we hate on eachother, sit in traffic, outsource jobs, have no long term savings, no interest in improving ‘America’/asphalt strip malls, and we still pay going on $4.+ for Marvel ‘comics’ -what do we do that makes us at all “matter”?

Marvel is imploding. Unfortunately, many retailers rely on Marvel to pay the rent and provide cash flow to invest in other publishers’ titles. Hopefully, Marvel’s rumored return to a “meat and potatos” approach this fall will help turn things around.

9- Hulk
The french version is taking its toll. ;)
Is it not She-Hulk instead of Miss Hulk ? :)
Regarding Daredevil: from speaking to friends, many liked Daredevil for its separation from the main Marvel shitstorm. With the push to make a mini-verse with Dardevil, we have all dropped the title. Marvel screwed up by trying to milk the DD readers with this new initiative.
Marvel titles were overshipped to hell and back in December, you can check if by looking at the dollar share instead of the unit share.
Hawkeye #1 for example, unit rank 18, but dollar share 48, meaning that it was less ordered than Harley Quinn.
Champions, Mosaic and Avengers were matched to previous numbers sales. Champions had a dollar rank of 40, inferior to Spider-Man with 40006 units, terrible for a flagship book.
Again, thanks for all those comments.
Comet: they haven’t yet killed the golden goose in Deadpool. i have all the TPB dimaong numbers of the Deadpool TPB of the last few years and it is a never ending cash machine. Sales in the floppy department tend to be a little shier concerning his minis and quite weak whenver Marvel is pushing too far to try to sell a Deadpool product which almost doesn’t feature Deadpool.
Dave: The many variant could explain part of the jump and the fact that this is the start of an arc, but besides the fact that Marvel advertised strongly that it was Bendis last arc, there was probably some deal (order as much of this to have that…) which would explain the big jump.
Rui: thanks for this insight. Yep, we already know that number1 issue almost don’t have any value, now it’s sometimes also true for issue#2 number because of overship trying to reduce the usual major fall from issue #1, increased over time by the oversue of varant covers to advertise it.
Carl: yes, overship is disrupting a lot of numbers. Perhaps I’ll try to add a sign saying that there is some overship on a title but I don’t see how we can correct the numbers accuratly and with more than 70 titles to search overship pourcnetage over, this would turn into a nightmare for me. Alas, I can’t put more time on this column that I allow myself to.
Overship on the first issue of Sorcerers Supreme doesn’t change my mind over it and thefact that this is a failure saleswise. I never take into consideration sales from the first issue to decide if a title is performing well after its third issue -that’s why I change the % comparaison from issue # to issue #2.- No matter how high it started, Sorcerers Supreme wa sobviously a try from Marvel to capitalize on Dr Strange success. It didn’t work out at all.
Aaron: you are harsh :p Can’t say I would blame you, though. I’m not spending any € on any Marvel floppy right now and will not unless ,they start to upgrade the quality/price of their floppy products (number of ages, paper used, ads). I will of course not comment at all on what America is. I can only say to you that France is taking a plunge toward darker times with an ever growing certainty.
Steve: Marvel would be dumb to no try to take advantage of what they actually managed to do with some of their new titles: attracting a new crowd of readers towards their products, something they almost never managed to do! Going back to what the “fans” are asking almost never work because hard-time fans are almost never happy. :p
“angry old fans” is not necessarily a fair label. I know there are many people who grew up reading Marvel comics (take your pick as far as what generation because at the end of the day, the person who grew up reading the Claremont/Byrne X-Men aren’t really that different from the person who grew up reading the Jim Lee or Grant Morrison X-Men for example) and Marvel has been phasing fans out for a few years now with how they’ve handled their characters. I would assume the idea is to hook fans early, have them develop a loyalty to the company and characters while working to develop new fans. Marvel seems to want the new fans at the expense of the old fans with the view that “Marvel Zombies will buy anything with our characters” and “New #1 issues will keep bringing new fans in” while not providing the character consistency that older fans want.
Speaking only for myself, I no longer buy Marvel comics because I don’t enjoy what they are doing with the characters to the point that many of them are completely unrecognizable to me after reading so many stories over the years. I think that is more on editorial than the writers because they should have the characters handled consistently by the talent. Personally, I didn’t ask for Cyclops to become a villain, I didn’t need replacements for Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, or anyone else. There was a time when you could get excited because a new character was created in book that would catch on and become popular. Sure, they could take an old name that wasn’t being used and put a new character in that spot and it would feel organic and that formula seems to work with Ms. Marvel but using Bill Foster Giant Man as cannon fodder for an event shows how short sited the company can be. I have no issue with not reading Marvel comics as I have a wonderful collection of comic books over the years that I can go back and re-read. If Marvel is having success (which doesn’t seem to be the case numbers-wise) with their publishing direction, that’s the way it’s supposed to work, fans move on when they don’t like the company’s output. But if you turn away a portion of your fan base, you’re not really building anything. Calling older fans “Angry”, is ignoring a group that is willing to spend money (and possibly a more consistent source of money) to be considered more hip and ultimately, in my opinion, more disposable. There should be a way to produce comics that appeal to a broader fan base than what they are currently doing.
I can’t speak to the percentage of overships for all retailers, but I’d assume they’re the same as mine:
Champions #3- Matched to orders for #2
Gamora #1- 100%
Ghost Rider #2- 40%
Guardians of the Galaxy #15- 100%
Gwenpool Holiday Special- 100%
Hawkeye #1- 100%
Hulk #1- 50%
Invincible Iron Man #2- 25%
Jessica Jones #3- Matched to orders for #2
Mighty Captain Marvel #0- 100%
Mosaic #3- Matched to orders for #2, which was matched to orders for #1
Nova #1- 100%
Occupy Avengers #2- 100%
Rocket Raccoon #1- 100%
Slapstick #1- 100%
Star Wars #26- 50%
Star-Lord #1- 100%
I’m not an “angry old fan”, I’m an “apathetic old fan”. I don’t hate most of the changes Marvel has made, the tone-deaf handling of the X-Men franchise being an exception. I’m just not excited about them. Other companies are making more engaging comics or employing more interesting marketing gimmicks. What has Marvel got? Costume swaps, yearly relaunches, ever-climbing cover prices and shrinking TPB value.
I still buy the occasional monthly title or reprint – I just picked up the Alpha Flight omnibus, for example. But when everything gets relaunched in 12 issues or less, why not wait for the trade when it comes to new stuff? Or just buy used?
Regarding Shawn Kane’s comments:
I too am a long time Marvel fan – 43 years – and agree with your sentiment and comments. The bottom line is that there is no point arguing with anyone about this anymore. I get it – different strokes for different folks, i.e.: younger, hipper, more socially conscious readers and all that. You and I are no longer Marvel’s target audience, and so I just don’t care to spend my money on Marvel’s current output.
Many mistakes in this analysis. Writer ignored free issues. Mosaic sales are terrible without them. LCS bought only 18k copies of 3rd issue. The rest was send them for free.
many books had free issues and You can use comichron to find which one
The point of Marvel overships is to make the drop in sales from #1 to #3 less pronounced and even if you can’t point an asterisk to each and every title affected.
@Ian Raistrick
I can confirm some of those numbers as they match the overship one of my contact got at his store.
Shawn Kane, spot on. I have NEVER seen a more complete character assassination than what was done to Cyclops from the time that Grant Morrison got ahold of him onward. Want proof that old fans are wanting to read about the classic versions of their favorite characters? Unworthy Thor is outselling the “main” Thor title. I’ve been buying Unworthy, the first time I’ve consistently bought a Thor title in some time. Also, the Steve Rogers Cap far outsells the Sam Wilson version. I buy both titles, but I’ve come close to dropping the Sam Wilson title because it wants to constantly beat the reader over the head with social justice issues. The recent issue where Misty Knight filled in was like a feminist wet dream.
Okay why has thunderbolts been doing so terrible? The thunderbolts have just the right set up where you look at the characters and actually can see them all (except moonstone) ending up as better people by the end of the story. Also I may just be a 23 year old manchild, but Kobik is adorable!
ICV2.com has pisted the January 2017 sales estimates. Many Marvel titles posted significant losses and a few went up. Next month’s column will be interesting.
For those if you wavering on SAM WILSON, keep buying it. Looks like it’s ending soon.
Steve
Meant to type “posted” in the first sentence, sorry.
Steve
I have been making a document with anylisis of marvel’s sales starting october 2016
January’s sales are crazy.. All cosmic books seems to be failing bad, Riri has a drop of 45,6% from issue 2 to issue 3 and all those December’s number 1 have no endurance whatsoever
As for Champions? do not have those MAIN BOOK numbers anymore. Actually is behind EVERY X-men book save for ALl new and Mercs. And remember that is only issue 4!
Xavier Lancel if you’d like I can send you this. As a fellow european, always ready to help.
Marvel is claiming their declining circulation figures are due to retailers over-ordering DC REBIRTH titles and having less to spend on MARVEL NOW titles. (That’s why they overshipped so heavily.) In reality, looks like readers just don’t like much of the new Marvel line. That said, some of Marvel’s titles are excellent; CHAMPIONS, for example, is well written and superbly drawn. I also like UNCANNY AVENGERS and GOTG.
Steve
Marvel needs a big reduction in number of titles and a DC style Rebirth.
That drip on Captain America Steve Rogers is really odd given its title marvel are building an event on. I noticed last month sam wilson took a major dip as well, I wonder if people have just given up on Nick Spencer unsubtle political rhetoric
