When I saw the headline “Corner Box” Variants in my email I got all excited because I thought it was a throwback to Marvel’s “box full of tiny floating heads” cover design of the 60s and 70s.

However, this series of February variants uses the”corner box” in a different way, with a rectangular image that could have been in a corner box, if we were using corner boxes today in 2016.

I am sad that these corner box variants don’t have corner boxes, because qwe love in a time of irony and absurdity. But they do have Joe Jusko art. And that is good.

“We’re elated to have Joe Jusko do a series of variant covers based on the classic Marvel corner boxes,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Joe perfectly recaptures what made that artwork so iconic in the first place, and he’s bringing that sense of gravitas to some brand new Marvel Corner Boxes featuring modern characters like Spider-Gwen, Deadpool and more.”

The first eight Corner Box Variants, coming to these February titles:

  1. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #24
  2. AVENGERS #4

  5. HULK #3
  6. INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #4
  7. INHUMANS VS. X-MEN #4
  8. ULTIMATES2 #4

And if that is not enough, there will be MORE corner boxes! Never say die!

  2. DEADPOOL #26
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE #17
  4. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #17

  1. Always loved Joe Jusko’s work. Pretty sure I have a folder full of 90’s trading cards somewhere that I was super into back then. Great to see his Surfer again. But I’d kill for a box full of tiny heads on the team books.

  2. >> a rectangular image that could have been in a corner box, if we were using corner boxes today in 2016.>>

Those are painted versions of images that were in corner boxes.

  3. All this wonderful Joe Jusko art just shows that Classic Marvel is DEAD.

The internet fans, ideologues, critics, and fans-turned-“pro” killed it.

    And it’s never coming back.

    EVER.
