For the first time since pre-pandemic, Free Comic Book Day returns to its traditional date of the first Saturday in May. This year 46 comics will be available, including 11 gold sponsor comics and 35 all-new Silver Sponsor titles. Marvel will have one Gold and two Silver titles with “each offering readers new and old an exciting entry point into some of Marvel’s biggest upcoming stories and characters.” It’s no surprise then that the publisher revealed today that the Marvel FCBD 2022 Gold title will focus on Spider-Man and Venom.

Just last week, Marvel announced that writer Zeb Wells would be taking over a relaunched Amazing Spider-Man title along with artist John Romita Jr. making his return to the book. Marvel has been hyping up a bold new direction for the webhead coinciding with the character’s 60th anniversary.

Likewise, the one-shot will also highlight Venom, a character whose title was also relaunched with a new creative team consisting of writers Al Ewing and Ram V and artist Bryan Hitch. The Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom book will feature a main cover by Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, and Marcio Menyz, as well as a 1:1000 incentive variant drawn by Jonboy Meyers.

Interestingly, the special issue will only be available for retailers to order via Diamond Comics, and not through Marvel’s exclusive primary distributor, Penguin Random House (Diamond has remained as a wholesale distributor of Marvel titles).

Keep an eye out for more Free Comic Book Day 2022 announcements. This one-shot will be available in comics shop on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
