The AVENGERS VS X-MEN crossover continues to dominate most of Marvel’s major titles in August, but this month also has the launch of two new titles – GAMBIT and HAWKEYE – plus the official 50th anniversary issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and the start of Neal Adams’ FIRST X-MEN mini.
DC had a slightly greater share of the North American direct market this month. But it was close, leading Marvel by 36% to 35% in terms of units, and 33% to 32% in dollars.

The lynchpin miniseries for this year’s crossover event continues to hold up very well indeed, selling miles better than anything else in the line, even in its fifth month.

Issue #692 was a $6 extra-size issue billed as the 50th anniversary issue (the logic being that AMAZING FANTASY #15 had an August cover date, albeit that it would actually have shipped earlier in the year). There’s a healthy sales spike for that, delivering one of the book’s higher numbers in recent years.
Issue #700 is just around the corner, sure to deliver another bounce, after which the book is being relaunched once again as part of the Marvel Now promotion.
7. AVX: VS 04/12 Versus #1 of 6 - 111,913 05/12 Versus #2 of 6 - 98,819 (-11.7%) 06/12 Versus #3 of 6 - 94,528 ( -4.3%) 07/12 Versus #4 of 6 - 86,526 ( -8.5%) 08/12 Versus #5 of 6 - 78,380 ( -9.4%)
The crossover B-title is tailing off rather more quickly than the parent title, which in itself isn’t that unusual – particularly as the book contains, as promised, no relevant plot content whatsoever. That said, it remains one of Marvel’s top sellers, which gives some indication of how well this crossover is doing for them.

Still enjoying the sales boost from the AVENGERS VS X-MEN tie-in issues, which started in April. The series is set to be relaunched with a new creative team after issue #34.

Again, still seeing benefits from the crossover, though perhaps not quite as dramatic as those on AVENGERS. The series ends with issue #20, to be relaunched as ALL-NEW X-MEN.

Similar deal here. The crossover is still bringing in the sales after five months, and this book too is set for a relaunch after issue #34.

And ditto, really. Oh, except that this book isn’t set for a relaunch. (At time of writing, anyway.)
27. FIRST X-MEN 08/12 #1 of 5 - 55,152
A miniseries by Neal Adams in which Wolverine forms a team who are a bit like the X-Men before the actual formation of the X-Men. Given that it’s not set in present continuity, that random X-Men titles haven’t done particularly well in recent years (look at the sales on X-TREME X-MEN), and that legendary creators are not necessarily a draw in the current marketplace, this strikes me as a surprisingly high number. The book did have 1:50, 1:75 and 1:100 variant covers behind it, which would have provided retailers with an incentive to up their orders, as well as sending a signal that Marvel was supporting the title.
28. SPIDER-MEN 06/12 Spider-Men #1 of 5 - 94,548 06/12 Spider-Men #2 of 5 - 68,283 (-27.8%) 07/12 Spider-Men #3 of 5 - 57,739 (-15.4%) 08/12 Spider-Men #4 of 5 - 54,215 ( -6.1%)
Fairly standard miniseries behaviour, levelling out as it goes along. It’s 12K ahead of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, which I’d regard as the real benchmark here – and that seems like a very good result to me.
33,34. UNCANNY X-FORCE 08/08 X-Force v3 #6 - 69,010 08/09 X-Force v3 #18 - 56,421 08/10 S&Violence #2 - 38,480 ===== 08/11 X-Force v4 #13 - 53,904 ( -2.7%) 08/11 X-Force v4 #14 - 50,770 ( -5.8%) 09/11 X-Force v4 #15 - 53,771 ( +5.9%) 10/11 X-Force v4 #16 - 52,398 ( -2.6%) 11/11 X-Force v4 #17 - 50,974 ( -2.7%) 12/11 X-Force v4 #18 - 54,274 ( +6.5%) 12/11 X-Force v4 #19 - 55,333 ( +2.0%) 01/12 X-Force v4 #.1 - 50,399 ( -8.9%) 01/12 X-Force v4 #20 - 51,054 ( +1.3%) 02/12 X-Force v4 #21 - 50,654 ( -0.8%) 02/12 X-Force v4 #22 - 49,665 ( -2.0%) 03/12 X-Force v4 #23 - 48,867 ( -1.6%) 04/12 X-Force v4 #24 - 50,667 ( +3.7%) 05/12 X-Force v4 #25 - 50,851 ( +0.4%) 06/12 X-Force v4 #26 - 47,522 ( -6.0%) 07/12 X-Force v4 #27 - 46,325 ( -2.5%) 07/12 X-Force v4 #28 - 46,367 ( +0.1%) 08/12 X-Force v4 #29 - 45,159 ( -2.6%) 08/12 X-Force v4 #30 - 44,918 ( -0.5%) 6 mnth ( -9.6%) 1 year (-16.7%) 2 year (+16.7%) 3 year (-20.4%) 4 year (-34.9%)
A book with no particular gimmicks or crossovers to boost its sales, so it’s nice to see it holding up so well. The series is heading for a relaunch after issue #35, which seems to fit neatly with a natural ending for the current storyline.

Extremely consistent sales for the last four months, which Marvel ought to be very happy with. It’s not so long ago that this book was down in the 36K range, so the retooling seems to have produced a sustained sales increase.

Issue #317 has been solicited as the “final issue”, which is probably Marvel’s way of saying that the book is being relaunched in January.

Two new titles that, for some reason, miss out on participating in the Marvel Now promotion. Both come in at around the 40-41K mark, which is similar territory to the launch issues of CAPTAIN MARVEL and GHOST RIDER.

69. DAREDEVIL ANNUAL 08/12 Daredevil Annual #1 - 32,373 72. WOLVERINE ANNUAL 08/12 Wolverine Annual #1 - 31,969
These are the concluding chapters of a three-part annual crossover which is really an opportunity for Alan Davis to revisit the ClanDestine. The core DAREDEVIL title sells about 6K more than this, so it’s not a bad number at all for that annual; the WOLVERINE book is obviously some way adrift of the parent title. (The first part of the story, FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #33, came out in July and had estimated orders of 32,435, so retailers have ordered all three issues at very similar levels.)

That’s a rather big drop for a title this far into its run, and selling at this level.

Both of these issues have variant covers, though the impact isn’t exactly huge.

A selection of stories celebrating the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man. As you’d expect, they all sell in fairly similar quantities.

The AvX crossover issues ended in July, so this month’s two issues ought to see a drop back to regular sales. In fact, though, the title remains a good 5K up on previous numbers – a huge improvement for a title at this level.
Nonetheless, the series ends with issue #39, its place on the schedule effectively being taken by AVENGERS ARENA.
99. WINTER SOLDIER 02/12 Winter Soldier #1 - 50,932 02/12 Winter Soldier #2 - 41,164 (-19.2%) 03/12 Winter Soldier #3 - 34,923 (-15.2%) 04/12 Winter Soldier #4 - 33,519 ( -4.0%) 05/12 Winter Soldier #5 - 30,646 ( -8.6%) 06/12 Winter Soldier #6 - 30,386 ( -0.8%) 06/12 Winter Soldier #7 - 28,984 ( -4.6%) 07/12 Winter Soldier #8 - 27,317 ( -5.8%) 08/12 Winter Soldier #9 - 26,255 ( -3.9%) 6 mnth (-36.2%)
Continuing its downhill drift, which seems a little too fast for comfort. Writer Ed Brubaker has publicly acknowledged that the book was going to end at issue #15 until it got a reprieve, and it seems reasonable to assume that numbers like this will keep it in the danger zone.
101. The rebranding as DARK AVENGERS has boosted sales to a degree, but the effect seems to be fading fast.
A new THUNDERBOLTS series is coming as part of Marvel Now.
102. X-TREME X-MEN 07/12 X-Treme X-Men v2 #1 - 36,802 08/12 X-Treme X-Men v2 #2 - 25,689 (-30.2%)
That really doesn’t look very healthy, let’s be honest. How much it reflects on the wider state of the X-Men franchise is a bit harder to say, as this is very obviously a revival of EXILES, rather than an X-Men comic proper.
Nonetheless, for a Marvel Universe book with X-MEN in the title to launch at these numbers, regardless of content, should surely be causing Marvel at least a degree of concern about the strength of the X-Men brand.
105. AGE OF APOCALYPSE 03/12 Age of Apocalypse #1 - 56,426 04/12 Age of Apocalypse #2 - 39,263 (-30.4%) 05/12 Age of Apocalypse #3 - 32,085 (-18.3%) 06/12 Age of Apocalypse #4 - 30,469 ( -5.0%) 07/12 Age of Apocalypse #5 - 27,223 (-10.7%) 08/12 Age of Apocalypse #6 - 25,393 ( -6.7%)
Losing readers at quite the rate. If it carries on like this we’ll be comfortably below 20K by the end of the year – and there’s no real sign of it levelling out.
106. SUPERCROOKS [Icon] 03/12 Supercrooks #1 of 4 - 50,434 04/12 Supercrooks #2 of 4 - 29,402 (-41.7%) 05/12 Supercrooks #3 of 4 - 26,969 ( -8.3%) 06/12 --- 07/12 --- 08/12 Supercrooks #4 of 4 - 24,898 ( -7.7%)
Fairly standard behaviour for a miniseries, and certainly good numbers for a creator-owned book.

Solid as ever. Okay, these two issues are at the lower end of the book’s range, but it’s still a pretty narrow range.

The start of the “Everything Burns” crossover with THOR delivers a surprisingly muted sales increase, considering that THOR sells over 10K more than this, and it’s an old-school “part 1 of 6” crossover.
The book is being retooled – though not renumbered – as a Sif title starting in issue #646.

>>[..]this strikes me as a surprisingly high number. [..]
Well, Marvel sent out a lot of free copies which should explain that.
Pretty dire. Don’t think I bought one thing from them.

Captain Marvel and Gambit heading for a quick cancellation. Damn. They are good books that deserve better numbers.
Wonder why Captain Marvel isn’t doing better, or why it wasn’t launched in Marvel Now!.
Marvel’s publishing strategy has for years looked like it was put together by a squirrel with ADHD. DC makes some bad decisions, but at least when you step back you can kinda understand what they’re trying to do. With Marvel, it’s like a random idea just sticks in somebody’s ear and BOOM! “Let’s bring back Ms. Marvel!”
Mike
I totally agree with MBunge! Everyone disses DC’s attempt at a relaunch, but they tried and some of the material is good, some was bad. I particularly liked the fact they took risk with many new titles & ideas (iVampire, Dial H, Ressurection Man, Demon Knights, etc). Marvel is essentially renumbering everything for the 3-4th time this past decade and mixing up some teams together.
I am tempted to drop most of the Marvel I still buy (approx 5-6 titles). I just dont believe in this Bullshit and it is clearly an attempt to relaunch their entire line and we ALL KNOW they will revert along sometime in the future. For some books, uits getting pretty messed up with so many relaunches and renumbering tactics.
For Petes sake, Hulk was just relaunched! And it was terrible…..now Spider-man , which is a real turn off. Well as long as people keep buying the $4 books…..they can keep milking the same thing over and over. I am actually happy alot of the Indie market has grown so much this past 10 years or so. They now weight for almost 30% of the Market. Not bad and alot of quality in some of the books out there.
On Captain Marvel: “Two issues this month. The second issue drop is rather steep, but on the other hand, the book levels out very quickly with issue #3.”
Could this be explained not so much by the book actually leveling out, but more likely because retailers simply ordered the same quantities of #2 and #3 since it was double-shipped and they had no real sales to base their orders on?
I’m surprised the Captain America and Namor book didn’t do better. I was handed one for free, which typically means overship. Didn’t much care for it and wouldn’t have bought another even if it wasn’t canceled.
The good thing about the Marvel NOW! thing is that it has allowed me to jump ship on a lot of books. I can think of at least six Marvel books that weren’t good enough for me to see to the end, and at least three of those that I won’t be picking up when they relaunch. Saving money is fun.
I just don’t understand why on earth they would want to inherit HULK’s sales for RED SHE-HULK. I just can’t wrap my mind around what sort of thought process could possibly make that sort of decision. HULK is the lowest selling uncancelled book, and yet instead of relaunching with RED SHULK #1, they want to inherit their lowest selling ongoing’s sales??
